Mike Reilly spent his lifetime chasing the California dream. This year he's going to look for it in Colorado. For him, years of rising taxes, dead-end schools and clogged traffic have robbed the state of its allure.
As a CA resident for over 20 years I've seen this state change by leaps and bounds. Don't get me wrong but the last 10years have been really tough in terms of crime, congestion, air-quality, the general mood and the sense-of-urgency everywhere.
Even though we're lucky to still have our jobs (so far) we've talked about moving out of state several times. With a 4yo we're really wishing we lived somewhere with better air quality. Not long ago we spent a long weekend in WA and we were amazed at how blue the sky was and how refreshing the air was to breath. When we came back it hurt to inhale the bad air here and we live near the beach. We both felt the burning sensation in our nostrils. Of course, two days later we got used to it. Not to mention how aggressive and uncurteous people here have become...flipping people off, reckless driving and no common curteousy are all things that really make me want to leave.
We just couldn't find another state with this much weather, natural scenery (30 mins to the desert, 30 mins to the ocean, 30 mins to the snow) and the eclectic melting pot feeling anywhere else. We briefly considered Austin and Portland but that was it.
