  • Email address showing up in Google Reader

Someone who follows my blog alerted me that my email address was showing up in Google Reader. Is there some way to prevent this, as I would prefer my blog to have at least some anonymity?

Also, is there any way to keep my blog out of Google Reader and other public places in the first place? I'd rather it were only viewable by SavingAdvice members...

As far as email goes, I've always assumed that the address, and the content for that matter, are about as private as a conversation at a crowded restaurant. As such, I always use disposable, 3rd party accounts.

The biggest thing is that both the forum and the blogs are thoroughly scanned by all the major search engines. Truth is, it does help the site by making the content available to anyone who searches for it.

So, the nature of the blog and forum is that we are in a public place. The best way to stay private would be for us to create our own blog or forum where we have admin level controls.

      Agreed with BA.

I scratch my head often when people say they are doing x,y,z to remain anonymous, when they aren't anonymous at all.

I use a completely separate e-mail/alias for forums where I prefer to remain anonymous. & let's face it - that isn't even foolproof.

Yeah, unfortunately, there is no expectation of privacy in public forums and blogs such as the ones here. In fact, if you look at the very bottom of the forum, you'll see "SEO by vBSEO 3.0.0 RC6 © 2006, Crawlability, Inc." So, not only is this place not private, but it's search-optimized.

By the way, I don't blame the owners here for that. Quite the contrary, they do have a business of sorts to run, and it's vital that they are able to generate traffic and increase the user base. Search optimization is just part of the business model so to speak.

Again, the I would basically treat this like "private" conversations at a crowded restaurant and assume that everything we type can be overheard so to speak. Again, the only way to ensure privacy is to create your own forum or blog that is customized for such a task.

Perhaps something can be done about the email specifically though, but that's something Jeffrey or Nate will have to comment on.

Large spikes in pages read and scams emails

I think my email address gets a few scam posts at times which I delete as I can see that they are scams but then there is very few emails other than saving advice blogs and self emails from my BB other emails that I wish the keep that get sent there. I work on one email address for each forum or group I post on! So easy to see Scam if it comes in!

Do you check your Stats? With mine about every few months I get a very large spike of pages read for one day with very few readers, something like 71 readers/visits to 1386 pages. Normally its around 40 to 140 visits per only. Average pages over a month is 4.8 to 6.44 per visit. This is happening a few times that I have notice on more than one occasion. I have always logged the number of readers & replies with my posts since I started. My reading now is 608 posts, 708 replies and 501,607 visits with averaging 825 per post but with the spikes how many pages are being read is anyone guess. So I do take it that the information I post is being copied so I am very careful not to give too much information away and they would have to do a lot of digging to piece it all together.

Isn't there a code you can add to your blog to block the spiders? I am pretty sure that you can set a flag around your email address to keep the google spiders at bay.

I have now removed the email address from RSS feeds. Probably wasn't a good idea in the first place.
