  • i bond pay out rate weird

I have i bonds bought 10/2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Anyway I noticed something weird. My 10/28/2019 purchase the rate is 4.05% on treasury direct instead of the 7.12% the rest are. Why?

Hummm...did you check their assumptions about inflation for 2019? They may have different data in the calculations for 2019 than in the ones for the other years.

Living, you've got me on that point. I only have like $250 worth of I-Bonds.

That said I dug up the contact page for Treasurydirect.gov - they'll probably respond back if you shoot them a note.

What month are the others purchased in? My bet is that they were purchased between Nov-Jan. All I bonds purchased during those months are already on the new interest rate.

I bonds give you 6 months of interest at each new inflation rate, in sequence. So you bought this one in October, which means it'll adjust it's inflation rates in April & October of every year. Once you hit April, it should adjust to the current rate & hold it until Oct, at which time it'll adjust to whatever rate comes out in May.

Why the 4.05%? Because the bond has a 0.5% fixed rate (from a May-Oct'19 issue), plus the May'21 inflation rate of (2*1.77%). That comes out to 4.04%, with the extra .01% probably accounting for interest accumulation. Come April, it'll be earning 7.67%.

            No need to fret.
