It seems that stocks generally perform best in the first couple of hours of trading. Why is that? Things will shoot up after the opening only to drift down as the day goes on, sometimes ending the day even lower than they started. Is there a logical reason for that?

I think volume tends to be higher in the morning also. A lot more trading happens early as the market responds to news that came out since the previous day's close. Once that's been factored in, the market tends to settle down, unless some other news breaks during the course of the trading day.Steve
