  • Estimate future value

I have some stocks and ETFs in Share Builder. I have been thinking about selling all of it and close the account. I have been putting in around 23K a year between 401K and IRA. I have not been adding any funds to the Share Builder account. Before I sell it and close the account, is there a way for me to estimate how much it would be worth in 20 years for low performance and high performance.

I am not looking for exact science, but a rough estimate based on percentage kind of like they have for estimating 401K.

Sure, you could use any type of savings calculator like this one:
Use Bankrate.com's free tools, expert analysis, and award-winning content to make smarter financial decisions.

Enter the current value, the predicted return, and the number of years. If you aren't adding to the account, just leave the monthly deposit at 0.

A bigger issue is why you are closing the account. What are your plans for that money?

We are going to invest half of it in a new startup company owned by someone else and use the rest to pay off my wife's car. The owner has shown the product and the business plan. We like it and we want to invest in it. He is looking for investment with 25% return in few years. I figure if it turns out good, we could make some money. We can afford to lose it as it is a risk after all. We know the person and we know what he has done in the past and was successful in it. The performance of the investment in Share Builder are not impressive, so my wife and I want to take a bigger risk with it. We have 10 times of what is in he investment in 401k and IRA, so we feel that it is okay to take the risk.

I hope I am making a good decision.
