My relatives have a fair bit of Medtronic stock and as you may know they are moving to Ireland for lower taxes. As part of that move I hear they will merge with the new company. My relatives were told that their shares in Medtronic will be sold and they will have the opportunity to purchase shares in the new company. This stock was a moderate allocation of their retirement and if they are required to excersize it the tax bill will be huge. When my stocks go through a merger I don't recall this happening. Anybody know anything about this?
Also, is there an easy way to find your cost basis for shares? They have been buying for a very long time.
