    This is the thing though - I don't disagree overall with Petunia and humandraydel's advice, but I just presume OP will have many decades in the future to use Traditional IRA and 401k space. I think it's wise to use ROTH space in lower income years and non-ROTH space in higher income years, and it gets you to the same end (a healthy mix of both).

    IRAs are far better than 401k as to fees and unlimited investing choices. That is why I would always choose an IRA first.

      A big advantage of a Roth IRA over a Roth 401k in my opinion is that you aren't limited in your investment choices. You can invest pretty much anywhere. In the process, you can potentially save many thousands of dollars through lower expense ratios over your working years.
