  • Check made out to my 1yo daughter

At my daughters first birthday party, a friend of mine gave us a check that was made out to our one year old daughter. She doesn't have a bank account yet, and I don't really want to set one up right now. What do I do with it, just sign it like it was made out to me?

You can just deposit it in your own account.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

You will have to ask your financial instution. Ours stopped allowing us to deposit our kids' checks when they were a few years old. VERY annoying - so we have savings accounts for them, for basically the sole purpose of depositing their money. At which point we can transfer it into our account (or wherever we want to). Of course, with age it matters less, but when they were like 3 or 4 I found it very annoying.

P.S. For the future, if you know someone will give you a check, ask if they can make it out to you. Just explain how it makes things easier. Everyone in my family makes every check out to ME. & I dutifully put it in the kids' college accounts and so on.

I've never heard that before. Right up until a few months ago when DD turned 18, I was still depositing checks made out to her into our account and then giving her the money. Of course, now she has her own account so it isn't an issue anymore.

Our bank, USAA, lets us deposit checks for our minor children. They have a particular way they want them endorsed, so I would check with your bank for their instructions, but I would guess in most cases you can deposit in your own account.

I always deposited the checks unendorsed, no problems.

Same here. BoA has the deposit image ATMs and I'd just put them in there. I didn't sign them at all.
