  • Where is the gold?

For those who invest heavily in actual gold, where do you keep it? I'm not requesting anything specifically revealing, but just in general, do you keep it on your property or keep it in bank vault or somewhere else? I'm just curious as to where the gold goes after you buy it.

I keep my gold in a safe deposit box.

I have a single gold coin. It's been passed down from my Great Grandfather. It is worth approximately $1700, but to me it's priceless, and I would never part with. I'm not telling you where it's at.

I wonder where people keep larger sums. It seems that physical gold in any substantial amount would take up quite a bit of room.

It's a standard gold coin. But the year and the loation of its minting makes it rare. That's why it's worth so much.

It doesn't take a huge (volume) Fort Knox amount of gold to be worth a ton of money. If I recall correctly, gold is near the top of the most dense metals on earth. A pound wouldn't take up much space but is worth quite a bit of money. Security of it is a different matter. I wouldn't keep any substantial amount at home, whether it took up a lot of space or not.

That's if there is any gold in fort knox anymore, no one has audited it (seen it) since the 70s.

If there is gold in fort knox, it all fits inside an average sized bank vault, and I believe it's worth about 700 billion (without looking it up). Shows you how much funny money is out there.
