  • Lessons learned, musings, and other expositions from Saving Advice

Well, this is from a couple of topics - my year end returns on my portfolio and my silver bug/philosophy.

As part of my divorce, I had my portfolio (which was basically a Roth - ex-wife had a 403(b), pension, and Roth appraised) assessed in June 2009. As of Jan. 3, 2011, I am up 100% since then.

I can remember back when during savingadvice when my Janus fund had run up about 80%. . .I said, "I am not sure how much more this can do." About 6 months later. . .the bubble happened. 20/20 hindsight. . .who knows where I would have parked it anyway (maybe bonds. . .but I am an equity guy).

Well, here I am again. . .my portfolio is up 100%. . .I am not sure how much longer I can, or really, I should ride the silver wave. Hey, I still see upside potential. . .the printing of money (quanitative easing - I love that acronym) mainly being the main force. . .but really, I bought in at $13.65 in 2006 and it's now about $28.00. I am now raising my bottom to $27.00 and expect to fully be out within days.

I may actually jump back into Janus Overseas.

    Lesson learned. . .

    1. Don't get greedy
    2. Ditch the passive management strategy for your portfolio (ie: buy and hold)
    3. Know when to take a profit (or lock one in)
