Is it safe to mail in deposit checks thru the mail? Have any of you done this?

My brick and mortar bank is about an 1hr away from me, so I almost always mail in checks to be deposited. I haven't had any problems. I always write for deposit only below my signature on the back of the check and you can talk to your bank, but some do not even require you to put the account number on the deposit slip.

My bank provides postage free envelopes for mailing and I have never had an issue.

I used to mail in deposits (I use USAA bank, which does not have any local branches here). Now they allow you to scan the checks at your computer, transmitting them electronically. After the scan is accepted you VOID the check and dispose of it; you never have to mail the physical check to them. It is a fantastic service!

I also have USAA and now deposit them this way. I can't deposit commission checks this way because they are typically over $5000 so I have to mail them. If I am mailing a big check then I will use certified mail as I want to be able to trace it.

Big checks...not the worst problem to have!

Have you considered opening a free checking account with a local bank so you could save money on the certified mailing? Then you could deposit the check locally and electronically link the local bank to USAA.

Since I lived 30 miles + from my credit union, I mailed check deposits to my bank for about 12 years. Never an issue (For 5 years I was self-employed and mailed a pile of checks in every week). I kept mailing when we moved 2 hours away.

THEN, mail was disappearing at my work (ended up being a mail theft ring through the post office) and I switched to mailing from closer to home. When the checks that had always taken 1 day to arrive started taking 2-3 days regularly, I stopped mailing.

I have sold stuff on ebay had complaints about shipping time. I honestly just think it is my city - they suddenly have some serious postal issues. Though it could be more widespread. Maybe the postal service is just getting slower?

Around the same time they opened a branch of a local CU on the corner by our house so we joined it.

Anyway, in 12 years and tons of checks mailed, the only issue I ever had personally was slow mail. & that only started in 2006. I would say it is safe. Just make sure the checks do not show through the envelope (use security envelopes).

I still mail checks on occasion. Only if I don't mind them taking 2 weeks to get there (in the offchance).

More banks are moving to scanning - sounds divine!!

Is USAA FDIC insured? I could not tell based off their website.

Yes, but it is only open to military members (past and present) and their families.

I have mailed checks and never had a problem. I do like the idea of being able to scan the check. That would be a great idea and would save time in travel time as well.

We're also USAA members and mail our deposits occasionally. More often I scan them in now! So cool!
