  • Online Brokerages

Any recommendations for online brokerages? E*Trade, TD Ameritrade and Zecco are the ones I am looking at. I am going to be an infrequent trader at best, so inactivity fees are a concern.

    Thanks in advance.

I use Schwab but it's because I have my banking through them and it's mostly for convenience.

If you are a frequent trader (lotsa transactions per year) then I recommend Scottrade.

I just switched to Wells Fargo. If you have $25k+ in assets at WF, you get 100 free trades per year. I know I won't use that many!

Oooh, please keep us informed on how it works out.

I am considering that route myself... whenever I finally reach 25k.

(While I'm here, I also almost considered Zecco as well, because of their free trades. However, I wanted to open an IRA account as well, and those cost $30 a year to maintain at Zecco, but it's free at Scottrade. Also, Zecco's interface and responsiveness is second-rate compared to Scottrade. In a way, you get what you paid for....)

Good ones have been mentioned already, however, I'd also suggest that FirstTrade and TradeKing may bear review as well.

I don't do much in terms of online brokerages but my brother does. He is 23 but has had stocks since he was 10 years old... it's what he wanted for his birthday! He is now a credit/loan analyst so he's all about the money.

He uses E*Trade and has used it for many years with no complaints.

We were with Etrade, then switched to ScottTrade. Hated the user interface of the website, and they lost some of our basis information that we'd entered, so we switched back to Etrade.

Thanks for taking time to respond. I am a total novice at this having had no experience at all of online trading. Want to tread carefully

Scanner, I had not thought of Schwab at all, thanks for your suggestion. Are you happy with their website?
