  • rolling over 401k to vanguard

I am 25yrs old and thinking about rolling over my 401k from my old employer to Vanguard.
My 401k is not huge...currently at approx. $2970. I know of vanguard's minimum requirements, but i'm not far from the 3k needed. My questions are..

Should I get the IRA then convert to a Roth?
(would i be penalized or would i only have to pay taxes?)
    or
Should I just stick with the IRA?

    also...
    what's your opinion on.
    Vanguard Target Retirement 2045
    Vanguard Target Retirement 2050
Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund

    thanks.

You're probably best rolling over directly to a Roth. You will pay taxes but no penalties. I'm interested how you will make the $3K minimum... are you waiting for your balance to rise, or can you contribute some to your Roth to put you over the limit... I'm not sure about that.

There's little difference between TR 2045 and 2050, take your pick. I like TSM, but keep in mind you will be invested in U.S. equities only. The TR funds give you some exposure to international equities and bonds.
