  • Do I have to be a USAA member to buy one of its mutual funds?

I'm looking at USAGX, the USAA Precious Metals and Minerals Fund, for an IRA investment. If I buy it from my discount brokerage I'm looking at a $50 transaction fee. I'd much rather buy it without the fee.

When you click the join buttom on the Investment page they have the option for non-military category. I believe Investments are the one area you do not need to be a member to purchase.

Hi. I tried the link you provided and went through the steps... I didn't see a separate application for Investments, and was deemed ineligible from the info I supplied in the application. I went to the Contact Us page which had phone numbers, but no Web forms or e-mail addresses. I telephoned the phone number for Investments, and the automated menu required a USAA account number before I could ask a live person a question.

As an offside comment, I am not thrilled when general inquiries phone number automated voice menus require an account number from the caller as suggests that only accountholders can make general inquiries. Which makes me wonder how people open accounts at USAA. Yes, I pressed '00' on my phone to talk to a live person.

Maybe I need to find someone who has an account at USAA to call the general inquiries investments line on my behalf and ask if people ineligible for USAA can buy their mutual funds...

I'm grateful you took the time to investigate for me.

Call this number 1-800-862-6909 and when it asks for a USAA number then press 0. Wait and you will be transferred a representative.

Thanks again. I phoned, got a real person, who broke the news to me that I can't even purchase USAA mutual funds through a discount brokerage. That makes me sad, because there are so few no-load precious metals and minerals mutual funds of decent quality out there...

If you aren't particular about USAA there are few others:
VGPMX - Vanguard Precious Metals and Mining
FKRCX - Franklin Gold and Precious Metals
