  • What is material pressure?

"The XXXX investment returns in fiscal year 2007 were driven by strong stock markets both in the U.S. and internationally. However the financial markets have come under material pressure the last several weeks (July and August) due to a dislocation in the credit markets, specifically sub-prime mortgage debt."

What does that term mean, generally? Googling it, I only find reference to the science of pressure vessel engineering, vaguely familiar since I proofed a thesis on the topic last spring! But does it have understood meaning to investors?
"There is some ontological doubt as to whether it may even be possible in principle to nail down these things in the universe we're given to study." --text msg from my kid

material pressure might be a scarcity of a commodity, or group of commodities which is impacting production which impacts profits.

commodities/ supplies was my first impression.
