  • How long have you had a 401K?

I noticed that the 401K to which I contribute is celebrating its 20th year of operation. ( Back then, it seemed like it took forever to get a 401K program established where I worked compared to everywhere else. ) I was very happy when my employer offered a 401K.
For DH, it was even longer--in 1999 he finally was able to take a job that offered a 401K.

I've only had mine for just over a year. Our job put in 8% of your salary along with matching it and then you are vested in 5 years.

Neither dh or I have ever worked anywhere that they were offered. He has been self employed most of his life. Sure wish we had one.

        Almost 15 years.

Took that 401k and rolled it into a self directed IRA. Have a new 401k where I work. I put in 7% and co. matches $.50/dollar up to 6%. Pretty sweet.

I've never had access to one. I will in a couple months (my job offers one, but only for employees who've been there longer than I have) but there is no match.

              aurielle,
Don't you have the TSP? (or do you have a state gov't job?)

Very interesting that we constantly read, hear and talk about 401k participation and, so far, nearly a quarter of us don't have access to one.

DW does have a 401k at her new job, but I've never had one.

I've been working for 6 years, and I signed up for mine the first paycheck.

Next year will be my 20th year of contributing to mine.

I've been working full-time since 2004, and now that I've gone back and done the math, had I started contributing earlier I would have almost $100,000 in my 401(k) right now.

I really regret not starting earlier, but at least I'm starting to save hardcore now. I guess you never really get the lost earnings.

All of you college grads, start maxing out your 401(k) right now! I wish someone told me earlier.

I'm still in my first job out of college...and my company has and AMAZING 401k plan (match up to 6%, plus they throw in 1% for you, even if you don't participate), so I've been in it since day 1, January 2002.

1 year this month. First year I was doing 2%, just upped it to 5% since I am now getting the company match of $1.50 on the $1. Fully vested in 6years I beleive it is.
