I've been doing research on Mutual funds Currently I own two. Vanguard's Target Retirement 2045 and International Growth. I also am looking into Vanguards REIT index fund, Janus Smart Portfolio Growth and Janus Overseas. What funds do you own? How many do you own? And what do you think of mine?

Re: How Many Mutual Funds do you have and which?
I currently own 11 funds between an IRA, 401k and a taxable account. I'm planning on consolidating that down to about 8.
Looking at your retirement fund of 2045 I take it that you have a long time to invest and you can afford for your risk tolerance to be quite high. One thing you have to watch with owning funds is that their holdings overlap too much and your diversification suffers which could be the case with the two target retirement funds. Also, your international exposure may be too high since you're planning on opening another overseas fund yet the Vanguard target fund is 15% international and you already own an exclusive international fund.
What are these funds being held in? I replied to your other post about taxable gains so I take it these are in a taxable account? The easiest thing of all is to deceive one's self; for what a man wishes, he generally believes to be true.

Re: How Many Mutual Funds do you have and which?
I own 12 mutual funds (including ETFs) in my taxable account and 2 funds in my 401(k). I also own a few stocks, but the bulk of my money is invested in mutual funds, with an emphasis on international funds (JAOSX, MPYMX, FXI, ILF, FICDX and Internatinal Equity Fund). Others include FLVCX, FSDAX, FSLBX, FVDFX, MUHLX, RYVPX, WWNPX and DODGX. My investments have been doing great, giving me 8% return just in the last 3 months.

yes, I planning on buying a house in a few years (4-5). I know everyone says not to invest in mutual funds if your saving for a house because your principle can decrease. However, I do have a large tolerance for risk and LOVE when i beat current CD rates. However I still maintain some CD and MMA accounts. Also, I am only 22 so I have time. Once I have the house situation secure then I will open a Roth IRA.
Safari - Do you think next year would be to late to get into that Fidelity Canada fund or the Janus Overseas fund?

Re: How Many Mutual Funds do you have and which?
An argument could be made today for holding just one fund, a targeted retirement fund, and I'm sure there are a fair number of people who will do just that. But that assumes your only fund investing is for retirement.
An argument could also be made for holding 3 funds: a total US stock market index, a total bond market index and an International stock index.
And, of course, lots of other opinions will come your way. Personally, I currently own 10 funds, not counting my money market fund. I probably don't need them all at this point but just picked up 2 of them when we started investing in my wife's 403b. That caused some duplication of fund types which I may do away with in the coming year and knock the total down to 9 or 8.Steve

Re: How Many Mutual Funds do you have and which?
I won't beat you over the head with everything you've probably heard already but I hope that a strong bear market or severe market shift doesn't occur while you have that money invested in those funds exclusively. Although you do have some money in CDs and MMAs which is good. I understand you have a large tolerance for risk and know you love it when you beat the CD and MMA rates (I do too). However until you go through a real hard down time will you see what your true risk tolerance is. I know from personal experience what it's like to go through a volatile market without decent diversification. I'm still not quite up to the level in my 401K that I was at back in 1997 and that's with putting in 6% of my income a week with the company matching 75% of that. I'm not knocking your decisions or trying to preach to you but if God for bid the market does take a turn for the worse you may be praying for those CD rates. The easiest thing of all is to deceive one's self; for what a man wishes, he generally believes to be true.

Re: How Many Mutual Funds do you have and which?
We have 5 mutual funds.
3 Fidelity funds offered through my old 401k and 2 Vanguard funds. Like safari we had an 8% return in the last 3 months alone.
Your fund choices look fine to me. I would be careful though. My funds have not fared much better since I Invested most in the peak (1999) and they recovered fully around 2005. If you can hold off 5-10 years buying a house if the market tanks, then go for it. But be wary.

Here is the list of my funds with YTD returns. Also, note that the Oppenheimer funds have sales loads but we invest through a 403b plan so don't pay the load.
CSRSX: 32.64%
HRTVX: 25.25%
JANSX: 11.56%
OPGIX: 14.62%
OPGSX: 47.49%
VFINX: 15.21%
VGHCX: 10.45%
VIGRX: 10.22%
VWIGX: 23.19%
I guess that's only 9 funds. I said 10 earlier. Must have miscounted. I do plan to consolidate our international holdings as they've gotten kind of spread out.Steve

Re: How Many Mutual Funds do you have and which?
I'm in a goalsetting fund with merril lynch through my company's 401k that is set to "aggressive" and mine and my wife's roths are in Vanguard's Target Retirement 2045 (though we're hoping to retire 20 years before that).
I just love the fact that everything's on autopilot and I just keep my head down and make contributions.
