  • Free Credit Reports

I recently looked into changing car insurace to Geico but their rate was not lower then my current rate. Soon after, they sent me an email saying i could request a free copy of the credit report. My question is, I singed up for a free credit report earlier this year, probably in march or april, does anyone know if they will send me this report for free and without adversely affecting my score? I really want to know what my score is since i just signed up for 3 new credit cards and some new money market accounts. Im sure my score is shot.

    Re: Free Credit Reports

Usually you have to pay to get your credit score. The free credit reports don't include the score. If Geico has ran your credit report at the time when you applied for car insurance, then you can request it along with the credit score, assuming they already have it in their records. Otherwise, you can obtain a free credit report yourself once a year from each of the three credit reporting agencies, but it won't include your score, unless you pay for it.

so since they already pulled it i should be able to call up and get it for free with the score?

Yes, if they already pulled it, then the damage is already done and you should be able to get it for free from them. When I got a car lease a few years ago, the car dealership pulled my credit report and gave it me for free (it also included my credit score).

The experts say that having too many credit checks run on you, especially in a relatively short timespan, is a negative thing.

Only if it's a hard (i.e. actually seeking credit) inquiry. Soft inquiries from companies looking to target offers, or from you checking your own report, don't affect your score at all.

              Re: Free Credit Reports

Since GEICO bases your prmium on your CR, if/since you were denied credit, ie the best rate, you would also be able to get your credit report for free from the CRA that they used. It is the same if you were denied a loan.

Also, if your unemployed, on welfare and some other reasons you can get your report, no score for free. look on the CRA websites for the requirements.

Also, certain state laws provide a free credit report, NJ is one.

I called up and they should be sending to to me in a few days.
