  • Not recomending this or anything, but...

    from an email:

If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have $16.50 left of the original $1,000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have less than $5.00 left.

BUT, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling price, you would have $54.00.

Based on the above, current Milwaukee investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

    It's called the 401-Keg Plan.

Re: Not recomending this or anything, but...

Ha-ha! I guess the really clever investors are the ones mopping up after others. The guys and gals we see pushing carts around town picking up the cans from the dumpsters behind taverns and out of the gutters and ditches....

A woman who retrieves aluminum from the alley dumpters behind private residences in my neighborhood used to own a auto dealership. Well, her husband did. In Kabul, Afghanistan. Now as far as she knows, her husband has died imprisoned in Russia. Her children are dead, killed in their own home in the same war. I think she got refugee status to come here well before the US direct action in Afghanistan. But anyway, she had had been among the elite in her poor country and now she is one of the poor in this rich country....Funny about cultural differences though---If I understand her correctly, one of her biggest indignities is that she has no rugs on her concrete floor in the basement in which she lives , the basement of a "nephew-in-law."

This woman sells her cans to another neighbor, who then takes them to a recycling plant. I'm not sure but don't think she can get there on her own. I hope the neighbor does that as a kindness and pays her for the cans at the going rate, rather than making a profit off of her labors. But one way or the other, it does give her at least some earned income. (Know why we are able to communicate? She's been learning English from television! Her way of speaking is by necessity so spare that it is like poetry.)

Ah, well, I guess I veered away from the original bemused tone of this thread.

        Hilarious, perky.

However, I'd much prefer something that gives back a positive return on my investments thanks.
