I have friend who used to do it all the time. Not because he's frugal, but because he's very bad with money and is always in need of more....

Anyways, they only paid him something like $50 is it? You can only do it once a week. Also, they pay progressively less and less the more often you donate.

So, it would help, but it wouldn't amount to $600 though....

I know you said you didn't want to give flute lessons. However, have you checked with local churches? I know many of the churches in my town pay for instrumentalists to play either with a group or solo and it's not an every Sunday sort of thing. They usually refer to it as special music or something like that.

Re: Could you come up with an extra $600/mo?

I would love to come up with an extra $600 per month. Unfortunately, I already have my budget pared down to absolute necessities and the little leftover goes to my snowball. I have RA and used to do quite a bit of selling my crafts on ebay until this but I have a notion to see how much I can keep up with on top of my full time job. That used to be as much as $600 a month, but I also physically can't devote the hours I used to to doing it. I wish I could find something else that I could make money at in what little spare time I have. I agree with you though, it has to be something that you enjoy doing.

Where Blood can be donated every 50-some days, I think plasma can only be donated every 100-some days. It does take a few hours, and you can't move during it. I'm surprised they are paying people! I don't know that the Red Cross is doing that (not in the Northeast anyway).

This is my favorite source of extra income!

I have mentioned it here a couple times.

Our local Biolife Plasma pays $20 for the 1st visit and $30 for the 2nd visit each calendar week. You can only donate twice in any 7 day revolving span. Also only at 1 center, no double donating. And yes people do try that.

At $50 per wk for each of you that is $400 or $500 per month for the two of you.

It takes me 90 min for the whole process. It is actually very relaxing and our center even has free daycare for when you donate...special hours only though. It is open from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm for convenience. No vampire hours sorry!

The phlebotomists are very good at inserting the needle since they do it 60 times per day or so and have seen every type of vein out there.

One other plan to raise $600 is to collect aluminum cans. It would take only 40,000 cans or so at the current rate to make it. That's alot of beer to drink but you can do it with our help!

Last idea was for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered as a resonable way to make money. Anyone who chooses to do this, should understand that your results will vary and I cannot be held responsible for your shortfall in the likely event you will not collect enough cans. I am also not responsible for any bodily injury resulting in the drinking of contents, collecting, crushing, bagging, and hauling of cans to the recycler.

You really do it? I don't like needles. I prefer to make extra money by earning interest in my savings accounts.

Re: Could you come up with an extra $600/mo?

I would love to come up with an extra $600 per month too... but it's not really possible. I'm barely making what I need for expenses now. I was working full time and taking 1 summer class over a 5 week session (6 hours/week). Now I am just working full time until full time grad classes start after labor day, at which point I will be down to 20 hrs of work per week (grad assistantship = $8.50/hr + 6 credits of tuition), plus 10-15 hrs of babysitting ($12/hr). My schedule is too crazy and irregular to add in another part time job, so I am very thankful for this babysitting opportunity that has come up with one of the families from when I was a preschool teacher (as it pays $4 more/hr than my main source of income).

                    We stopped getting cable (-$55/mo).
We are eating out less, buying food at the grocery store to have enough for leftovers, bringing lunch to work,
We moved to a cheaper apartment (-$70/mo).
I'm accepting any babysitting offers that come my way for occasional nights or weekends (+$10-12/hr). I usually end up making an extra $200/month with babysitting... once fall starts I will be babysitting regularly for a min. of $480/month in babysitting income :-)
I have 28 knitted bags for sale at a craft type thing (for $30-65/each) - Also available on my website - I'm crossing my fingers.
I've got all my extra money in my savings account making 4.35% interest/month (going to take out what I need soon to pay off one ofmy higher interest cc's)

Anyway, as it is I'm taking any extra money on my Graduate Subsidized Stafford Loans (6.8%, not responsible for interest until 6 months after I graduate) and applying it toward leftover creditcard debit (15.9-19.7%).

Can't wait til I'm done with grad school and have a real job...

Wow, $12 an hour for babysitting! I wouldn't be able to go out very often!

What size group rate is that? We pay $5 when the kids(3) are awake and $4 when they are asleep. We up that $1/hr for college students and also high schoolers with their own car.

How does the testdrive offer work? I would have a tough time doing it if you were only doing it for the money and not really there as a perspective buyer.

Demos? Do you mean the people at the store who feed us all the samples? Good plan!!! Usually during school hours if you have kids. Also, it is part time work and you can do it as often as you choose.

there is a sister site devoted to different savings games to keep it fun:

                            savemoneygames

Also for some of the cash you could try playing poker. you can start for free online, build up or lose it, it was free to try. (Dh has bulit up)

The moneysaving games are mostly about not using any storebought drink. We use almost whole bottle for juice and almost a gallon of milk a day in the summertime. It equals about $4/day or $120/month. It is like a half of our grocery budget. I really need to work on that. If I would cut the drinks in half, I can bring our grocery budged close to $150 for 5 people.

Re: Could you come up with an extra $600/mo?

Just thought I'd chime in with a few corrections/clarifications re: blood plasma.

                                1) Donating (selling) blood plasma through a specific blood plasma service is not the same as giving to the Red Cross and thus, not only does the Red Cross not pay anything, they also have much different regulations for donations.

                                2) Though rules/services vary, I have never heard of any that only allow you to give once a week. Every one I have ever seen has the guideline of twice per week.

                                3) Blood plasma centers vary in pay amount and schedule, however, it is not true that they pay progressively less and less each time. Most have a schedule that encourages a second donation in the week. That is, they will sometimes pay $20 for the first visit in a given week, and $30 for the second. The next week you come, the first visit is $20 again and the second is $30 (in this example) and that is how most, if not all, of these operations conduct business.

                                4) These centers typically offer a bonus for new donors. Check the local college or indie newspaper.

Note: I do not presently donate (sell) plasma, primarily due to the time it takes and the fact that I do not live near a center, however, I have known several people who have. Some say that it is comfortable, others have said it is an odd, uncomfortable feeling at times, and one who formerly liked to do this for extra money had an occassion where it hurt (his arm) and he has not been back; though he says he would in pinch.

In terms of the topic of this thread, one could quite easily make $100 a month at most of these centers simply by going twice a week for two weeks out of each month. Of course you could determine to make more or less depending on the pay schedule and your level of participation. Whether it is worth it or is a viable extra earner is for each person to decide.
