Does anyone know of an easy way, to layer the top of one's hair? Hairdressers we are sick of. These around here, don't do what we want. They want to do their own thing. Well we've all had it. Want to cut our own. Fortuneately mine came out nice. But my friends and I would love to know.

I am a hair dresser and now am a public school teacher. Cutting my own families hair has been very economical. I am amazed at the $ people spend each month on hair. One warning- don't do your own hair color unless you have a good sense of how to do color. Now for cuts, I am going to give some basic suggestions and then describe how to cut the top of your hair. This will be difficult since it is a very visual thing to learn.


Note when purchasing scissors and clippers: If you are going to cut your own hair, DON"T USE sewing scissors!!!!! Please go to a beauty supply and get scissors. Some supply houses such as Sally will allow non-licensed customers. You just can't buy chemicals and you will pay a different price. The size of your scissors should be about 5-7 inches. The blade should be about 3-5 inches Don't get the big long honker scissors. I find the smaller scissors are easier to use. You can get a pretty good pair for about $15. I would try not to get the real cheap one unless that is all you can afford. If you are doing buzz cuts or clipper cuts, you can get this at target or walmart. Wahl often has a movie to go with their clippers.

Suggestions:
1. To save money, you may want to find someone that cuts hair in their home. Often you will save 30-50 % and you do not need to tip in a home (optional). Then you don't need to learn how to do it yourself. Always ask around.

2. If you have a beauty school this is real cheap. Often they will let you pay more for someone that is about to graduate or..... if you request a certain person. This may be a good place to pick up cutting tips since often there is an instructor near by.

3. Another suggestion, that is if you have children or other members of your family is to ask the hair dresser to show you how to trim the child in between cuts. This will stretch your cut. This is usually just cutting around the neck, ears, and face. Pay special attention since this is often the first step to a hair cut. So you will then just trim one or two months inbetween a professional cut.

4. Another idea is to have the two of you (that you mentioned in your original posting) go together to have one persons hair done. Pay attention and ask questions of the hair dresser. Take notes on the angle and where they cut. When your hair needs cutting again, read your notes and comb through and hold the hair at those angles to visually see where to cut. only cut about 1/2 - 1 inch from each section to practice. Try to cut the same amount throughout the cut.

5. Another suggestion- go to a book store and see if there are any books on hair cutting. If so....see if you can buy it used on line or request you library buys it. My library has already bought me 4 books this year(on finance not hair).


6. Ask hairdresser to show you how to do something and pay her for that service. Since I have been out of hair styling for about 6 years, I still cut my kids hair (they are grown) but my daughter wanted a new hair color technique. Since I do not know how to do it, she asked her friend who is a hair dresser out of her home, if she could color my daughters hair and show me the process so I could duplicate it. She said fine so we are making a date in two week when I go to visit her. When I had a business in my home, at times I would teach some moms how to cut their kids hair if I knew they lived on a low income- this was to help them out.


Directions on how to cut the top of your hair:

#1 you can do it!!!


Hair cutting is based on the hair extended at various angles from the head. For your top layers, determine your length of your bangs by taking a small line of hair across the front, comb down straight down and cut. I often use the top of the eye brows as a guide so it curves down on either sides. Don't cut your brows. Secondly, determine the length of your longest layer (usually in the crow- top of head at the back.) Comb up a small section, usually a rectangle piece with the length of the rectangle being in the direction of ear to ear. Cut this straight across at your desired length. Now you will divide the top of your hair into a large rectangle that is about 4 inches wide and goes from crown to front bangs. You will take small sections, comb straight up and cut a line from the crown length to the bang length. As you pull up more hair from other sections (on top) make sure each section blends. In order for this section to blend with the rest of the hair, take small vertical (up and down) sections straight up and snip any extra hair. This will blend the cut hair into the longer hair. If you get bold, you can lower the angle to blend. This is too hard to describe.

I'd recommend shaving off all your hair using scissors at first, then a good razor. Then use a blade with shaving gel to finish it off. If you don't like it, you could always get a wig. I like those rainbow colored ones you see in Superbowl crowds.

I cut my son's hair with clippers and trim my daughters. She has shoulder length hair that is all one length including the fringe. It took years to go from a short layered cut to this style but is really easy now. I get my hair cut by a mobile hairdresser in my own house for about half the price of going to the hairdressers.

Just out of curiosity, is there a safe and economical way to cut your own hair that won't look terrible? Besides shaving myself bald that is....

Any tips for cutting curly hair? I try to cut it the same length, but it iwell curls, all different, so it isn't the same length when dry?

I don't want anythiogn fancy, I just want to trim the ends of my two kids and husbands hair without leaving them looking like someone took a hacksaw to 'em!

(and no I am not shaving anyones hair .)

Yep! My brother uses flowbee and we joke about it but it does a good job on short cuts. You can do it yourself. He has done it for years.

Any tips for cutting curly hair? I try to cut it the same length, but it iwell curls, all different, so it isn't the same length when dry?

I don't want anythiogn fancy, I just want to trim the ends of my two kids and husbands hair without leaving them looking like someone took a hacksaw to 'em!

Some hair that is extremely curly is best to cut dry. The nice thing about curly hair is that it covers a multitude of sins (i.e. bad cuts).

Forgot to tell you to cut your hair wet/damp. It will be easier to handle. Also use a regular hairdressers comb. This will control the hair better. Let me know how it works out.

Some hair that is extremely curly is best to cut dry. The nice thing about curly hair is that it covers a multitude of sins (i.e. bad cuts).

For your husband and boys, try using the Wahl clipper with the various blade covers. You just comb through the hair with the length guides and trim with scissors around the neck, ears and front. Get a clipper with a movie from WALH.

if you are lady and have longer hair pull it into a pony tail and, bend over and simply cut. My hair isn't that long.

My husband cuts the boys hair all the time. I still go to the hair dresser not a swanky salon though.

For the summer my DH and DS@ got buzz cuts. I have decided to buy clippers and try to do those myself after this. I am approaching this with trepidation since I once tried to cut DS1 hair when he was little. Maybe that's why he shaves it now!!! I have spent alot of time memorizing how salon cuts are done and still wouldn't want to try it.
