my SS statement says i am to get around 1200 a month. That is a joke because the system is supposed to be a negative saving in teh year 2040 which is when i am scheduled to retire! ha!
It seems like the SS system is one of the biggest 'pyramid scams' ever. I have paid into it my whole life and will most likely never see a payment...as I don't officially hit retirement age for 22 more years.
I get a different version of the "tons of money" comment. I was retired early as a result of a restructuring, and I supplement my pension income with a part-time job. I'm nearing the end of a five-year debt elimination process into which I've poured every spare nickle. Fortunately, I was able to restructure my debt to stay on track, and to protect my pension by finding non-competitive work.
The next person who tells me how lucky I am to be affluent enough "to live without working" is in peril of bodily harm. People don't understand what goes into a frugal lifestyle or the trade-offs it takes. They assume I can spend the way they do.
On the other hand, I likely seem to be relatively carefree and enjoying myself, which is true. Maybe I should grumble more. A little pre-emptive bellyaching might shut them up.
lol... some of the post here have cracked me up.... COL here (Hawaii) is sooo high it's not even funny... even a single family starter home (2-3 Bedrooms, 1-2 bathrooms) is over 500,000 if you want to live in a decent area... my parents bought their house almost 15 years ago for over 300,000 for 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms in a decent area... and rent sucks too... try at least 1,000/mo for 1 bed/1 bath apartment anywhere near where we live... bleh, bleh, bleh... we're going to be saving for a house for the rest of our lives...
ima, we're those young people you posted about earlier... and trust me, for those of us financially aware and responsible.... this sucks...

I can't imagine how anyone can afford a home there, yeouch!
This is true, I feel very sorry for all the young people trying to save for a house today. As for 14 to 21K in taxes every year, I would have to sell the house and move somewhere. I could never pay that kind of tax every year! I think under $2K is bad enough.
I don't own a house we pay alot in rent but because of my X my credit rating will not sustain a mortgage yet. Nor will his. We started over (middle age) and hav emanaged to get rid of most debt (still two cars for another year and some medical bills) We are now in a position that we hope to be able to buy somewhere next year. Unfortunately we also hope to be moving which will mean changing jobs and having to rent for awhile again. We are looking into alternative ways of building a house. When I was young there was a big movement to do this but I had lost track of it. I am picking up pieces of info and trying to acclimate my husband to the concept of alternative housing. We know someone who used tires for outside walls. i think this will be the only way we will ever own a house again because of our age and sheer terror at the concept of going that far into debt again.
I guess it depends on where you live, on cost of housing. My girlfriend just bought a older house for under $80,000. You cannot buy a mobile home on a lot, around where I live for that amount of money.
