  • unexpected Social Security deposit

My husband just had a deposit from Social Security that we think must be related to the end of the Windfall Elimination Program. We will be cautious about it, though, as we had not done the math to see how much he would be owed, not had the Social Security Administration told him how much to expect. We think what was deposited was "back pay". From the communication he did get, he thought it was going to take months for the change to be made.

I know there was at least one other person on this forum who was affected by this. I'd like to hear if you have seen any movement from SS on it.

Edit: I found this which explains that backpay may come before the letter explaining it. https://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits...ss-act/403324/

What a nice surprise. I would have been affected in 2031 when I turn 65 (59 now) and start collecting social security due to also getting a government pension but with this change I'll be getting 100% of my social security payment. Before this change the Empower retirement guy that I met with in 2024 told me 40% would be taken for the Windfall Elimination Provision. So now when/if I turn 65, I'd get the full $1200.
