I'm really surprised by how much college-bashing goes on here. So I'm curious how many of you are college graduates. I don't care what your degree is in. I don't care if you are currently working in your field of study. I just want to know if you attended and completed college.

Do you have a college degree?

United States Naval Academy BS Electrical Engineering
Yup, came in handy for 20 years in the Navy. The engineering degree was very helpful as a test pilot. The Academy network got me a job after I retired from the Navy and continues to provide valuable networking. You could'nt do what I did nor what I do without a degree.

I went to a 2 year school for an associates degree. Out of high school I really didnt give it much thought. Figured I would go to this school and get some degree in IT. I am still working in the IT field.
My wife on the other hand had her path mapped out. She has a phd...is still working in the same field she went for...and surprise surprise...make significantly more than I do.

Her grad degree was free + they gave her a stipend of around $30k/year. Her phd is something like biochemistry and molecular genetics. Actually iI think her undergrad was biochemistry and the phd is MG. Apparently a lot of science grad degrees are free...as long as you go for a phd. Essentially she was working in a lab and taking classes...so it was like a job.
She no longer works in a lab because its a cluster. Out of 8 people I know who started in a lab only half still work in a lab...the remaining still do other related things in the science field. Best decision she ever made.

Mine is a BS in Chemical Engineering.
On the front end you have to have a good idea of what you want to do with your life. And it helps if you go into a technical field that demands higher wages. If you spend 4 years to major in history or English or gender studies, you'd better have a plan on how you're going to apply that. The same applies for a specialized niche field.

If you are interested in a high demand field, you can get hired in college. Right now, our company is making offers to juniors if they are an optics engineer from one of the 2 major optics engineering schools. If you are a manufacturing engineer and intern with us your senior year, we will make you a job offer a year before you graduate.

My daughter is graduating high school in a couple weeks. The college she is attending for Industrial Engineering has a 100% placement rate for their graduates. She can stay an extra year and get her Masters. The university is very competitive bringing in 400 employers each fall and spring for internships and jobs.My other blog is Your Organized Friend.

Of course I lived at home and commuted, no way my father would've let me go live at school. That's how Italian fathers where.Steve
* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.
