What was your last big splurge?

However you define "splurge", tell us about your last one.

Here's mine. I just booked a one-night hotel package for my wife and I for later this month. We will be on our way home from a medical conference that ends Saturday morning so we were looking for something to do that night since I don't have to be back at work until Monday.

We found out there is a food and wine festival in one of our favorite getaway spots that weekend and it's on our way home. A very nice hotel there has a package deal for a one-night stay and 2 VIP tickets to the festival. By the time we're done with the hotel, parking, meals, etc., that one-night stay will probably cost us about $600.

We figure it is our reward for making the last college tuition payment last Sunday. We've been spending $3,100/month for college. We can spend $600 one time to celebrate.

So what did you last splurge on?

did some upgrades at our new house that required an electrician...

new under/above kitchen LED lights (mentioned elsewhere on here).

removed old plasma tv above fireplace, old receiver, old wires. tv seemed like a potential fire hazard...

New tv, new receiver, new in-wall speakers, new mounting bracket, new surge protector, additional electrical outlets at the mantel level.

All of the above was just under $3000...

I changed out quite a few light bulbs (myself) and replaced with LEDs.

I also bought $7000 of VTI in mid-March, right before all the ups and downs in the stock market. A non-consumer kind of splurge.

Suppose to be 28k. We still haven't done our taxes due to a hiccup but that's what Tesla wrote down on their quote.

We took a very needed 2 week vacation about a month ago, including a Caribbean cruise for DW & I. We don't splurge often, but when we do, it often tends to be on travel.

A recurring "splurge" that happened for us again yesterday was the house cleaner that we (DW & I) agreed to hire to do a once-monthly deep cleaning for us. Started around Christmas, and we decided that not having to spend our little free time (with 2 full time jobs & 2 kids under 3y/o) cleaning bathrooms was well worth the relatively small cost.

My last big splurge was to swap out my sewing machine for a newer better one with more capability than my prior one. It will take me the rest of my life to figure out all its bells and whistles, but it has one simple upgrade that with my RA made it worth every penny of the upgrade. Instead of having to reach under the machine head with my right arm to flip the presser foot lifter up or down, there is a button right on the front of the machine to press and it does it for me. Just that one gadget has allowed me to more than double my time in front of the machine! The reaching I had been doing was doing a number on already sore shoulders. Now if I could have more time to sew.

Placed an order with an excavation contractor to have an old dilapidated farm pond completely reconstructed and put back into good condition. Dam had breached many years ago, brush and trees had grown up, pond silted in, etc.

We have done a metric butt ton of splurging the past two months. The trip to AZ was more than I budgeted for even though I tried to keep things as cheap as possible. I forgot to include tourist inflation to the prices. Water under the bridge, I already paid everything off. We paid several hundred dollars extra to rent a new Pacifica instead of a car because we are thinking of buying one. Turns out that we don't really like it as much as we thought we would. We now plan on keeping the dreaded Subie another year and see if anything else strikes our fancy.

We got our $4,100 massage chair two days ago. All three of us fight for chair time. I have named it BOO, for Bag Of Oranges, because it feels like I'm bruised everywhere even though I don't see any marks. The foot massage has actually helped the plantar faciitis at least.

Our next splurge will be $1,500 for general anesthesia for my daughter's oral surgery next week. Our insurance says it isn't medically necessary and I got a talking to from the surgeon when I asked about it. It isn't like I want my daughter to go through a lot of pain just to save some money. I just want an explaination sent with the charges so the insurance will consider it!

Is your daughter having wisdom teeth out? I had mine out under general anesthesia, but then I was in my late 30's, had an abcess starting under one of them, and none had erupted at that point. The oral surgeon wanted to get them out during a planned procedure rather than as an emergency. Afterwords the first words I heard was my mom saying the doctor thought she should take me home for the next 24 hours. Doc said they were so hard to get out he about had to stick a foot in my mouth for leverage. Unfortunately I got nerve damage anyhow and 5 months later went to Mass. General in Boston to have mircosurgery. But my face post wisdom teeth was ghastly looking. for a couple of weeks. So if the doc is concerned about any sort of odd things, that might be a good enough reason for the insurance to kick in. My ex got his wisdom teeth out by the same doc and had one of the quick acting anesthesia and was awake and raring to go and came out of the office and wanted to go yard saling. I could have kicked him. He had insisted on paying extra (money we didn't have) for the anesthesia. I was so sick after mine.

I haven't been running due to my knee (patella tendon), so I transitioned into hybrid biking (Trek DS2) that cost $650 two months ago (after we received our tax refund). I must admit, I enjoy biking a lot more than running, not sure why I waited for this so long. Today's ride is my longest ride 31 miles so far with my buddies. Who knows, I might eventually enter an Ironman marathon/biking combo if I train even harder

Nice. I remember when you were debating what to get him. I hope he enjoys it and gets a lot of years of safe and happy driving out of it. And it sounds like you got a good deal on it.
