  • What's the most you've spent in a day but not on a house or car?

Was it worth it or do you regret it?

    1) $1500 for a semester of college (worth it to me), I paid in full every semester.
    2) $500 for Las Vegas escorts (not worth)
    3) cryptos maybe $3000 a day (TBD)
    4) $5000 to rewire my 1 bedroom condo (worth it because it sold for more)

Oh, I've had many very expensive single days. I've spent upwards of $3k-$4k on booking travel on many occasions, on small shiny things, electronics, as well as on repairs/improvements to our home(s).

As I think about it, most of our high-dollar days (excluding cars/houses) have been around/below $5k. I'm trying to think about what else ... although I can't think of the specific expense, I somehow feel certain that I did something in the $8k-$10k range years back .... but perhaps that financial trauma is being repressed by my mind. Although I suppose if investments count, I've made some MF purchases in excess of $25k before.... though that's more of an asset transfer vs. an expenditure.

Keeping in mind... on average, our annual spending has typically hovered roughly in the realm of $80k-$100k/yr. So even a single $5k day constitutes at least 5% of our annual spending in a single day!

When you say not on a house do you just mean buying a house? I’ve certainly spent significant amounts on home repairs like a new roof or windows or siding. Just this month I paid the $3,257.80 balance for an upcoming trip. We paid eight 5-figure tuition bills when our daughter was in college 2014-2018.

Exclude a house purchase or car purchase since those numbers will be high. But repairs on either can be included. My catalytic converter repair at the dealership would have cost me $5000 to repair but I found a cheaper alternative getting a new after market $900 catalytic converter and a muffler shop charged $250 to install for a total of $1150 which was still expensive but I saved almost $4000 by avoiding the dealership.

$10k for a Rolex "Batman" GMT watch. I had wanted a Rolex for 30+ years but always had more important things in life to spend money on. Finally got the nerve to buy it after my kids graduated from college and I was free and clear of any debt. Although I'll never sell it, the value has doubled even as a used watch now. I guess airfare might be my other higher-end spendings.

I remembered .... Some of my most expensive days are when I pay the property tax & insurance on our houses (primary & rental). Downside of no longer having a mortgage is that I have to pay those myself, so I tend to do it all in one shot to know that it's done & I don't have to worry about it. This year, that was roughly $10,500. It hurts to watch all of that vaporize in a single afternoon. It goes in a series of separate payments from a couple different accounts (personal vs. rental), but definitely all in one day ... woof.

Kork reminded me about capital gains taxes where I paid $37,000 in taxes on the sale of my one bedroom condo for $250,000.

I've purchased a couple farms, bought tractors, boats, paid upwards of $10k for vacations or hunting trips, etc.
Wrote a check for annual health insurance most recently for approx. $8k.

For the truck, I issued three separate checks, $20k, $10k, $5k over a three month period.

Siding replacement was $17k total, but that was split up over three equal payments.

I purchased an AutoCAD Plant 3D software suite several years back, that pushed $10k.

As far as just plan "stuff" goes, the telescope I'm working on is probably going to top the list. I spent $2k for the mount last month. I plan to spend $1.6k for the telescope this month. The there will be probably another $1k in accessories in the coming months.

Medical wise, my rabies vacation was expensive. I had a $2k out of pocket cost for that even after fighting with the hospital. I am planning on signing up for a low dose CT scan through a company, Virtual Imaging in the near future. Their price plan is kind of murky. It looks like $4k for the service, but after discounts, it's actually <$1k.

Was that for repairs? How much is this truck worth that you spent $35,000 on it in 3 months?

$22,000 to have a deck and covered porch put on our cabin.
Sort of a house I guess.
                      Totally worth it.

Furnance was $15k. $60k for home renovation by check. $5k garage door. Trip is $14k for tour. I've paid $10k for cruise.

Now are we talking about smaller stuff? $1500 on adele tickets I'm seeing her on friday!!!! $1000 for billy joel for 4 tickets. Airline tickets $2000 is not abnormal.

                          No.

                          $32,000

I'd saved up with the intent of paying cash. I had $32k in the account at the time of purchase, but with the warranty and service plan, it bumped the price up to about $35k total.

I had just spent close to $3k on repairs for the Frontier and had the transmission fail on me while 250 miles from home. I managed to get back to town and pulled the trigger the next day.

Oh, to buy the truck? That makes more sense. I didn't follow since QMM said spending not counting buying a house or car.

$5000 for 1 dental implant but over the course of almost 2 years. The crown or the cap or whatever it's called had cost the most at $2000 but because my dentist had changed insurance on me when I had him for decades so my insurance didn't cover the crown. If I knew he didn't take my insurance I would have gone to another dentist but cannot cry over spilt milk. I'm satisfied with the implant. The alternative would have been a bridge which grinds down 2 perfectly good teeth to anchor the bridge which I also have on the opposite side which is good but it makes no sense to me to grind down 2 perfectly good teeth in order to hold the bridge when an implant doesn't need to grind down 2 perfectly good teeth. Bridges must be olden days procedures before implants became more common.
