Really this is a pretty broad topic.

It could be something as simple as having a flat tire on the side of the road, or tripping while you're out on a hike. I do caving now, and some amount of emergency supplies is necessary for that.

There were probably a dozen occasions we were with out power for a day or two when I was a kid due to hurricanes. I think the longest we went was a week. While I was at Auburn, the city went 3 days with out power due to a snake shorting out a major power station.

To use today's language, my family was victim to a home invasion when I was 10. No where near as bad as it sounds, a drunk guy broke a window out because he wanted to sleep in our living room but we were home at the time. My parents held him at gun point until the police arrived.

To ua_guy's point, the media does fear monger quite a bit. I am not personally worried about riots where I live, but they definitely happen. That CHAZ is a perfect example of lawlessness on a large scale. Where were the city police, state police, or National Guard?

I don't think the Chinese or Russians are going to invade. ICBM are scary but our defenses are good. Ramjets will make you **** yourself if you read up on what they can actually do, but I don't think we're there yet.

I'm not terribly worried about aliens. Honestly they'd look at us the way we look at ants. And with any luck covid will take them out.

I'm not holding my breath for the zombie apocalypse.

If there is a rapture, hopefully I'll be somewhere else.

The sun going supernova and rogue black holes will occur at some point, but probably on the scale of billions of years from now.

I can't top supernova for emergency situations.

It started as a protest. That's not illegal in this country, contrary to what many think, protest is legally protected free speech in various forms. "Chaz" was shut down at the order of the city's mayor by police when actual violence and lawlessness started occurring. A lot of people took the hook/line/sinker from the media on Chaz.

Knowing people who actually lived near there, yes, there were a couple of sad and unfortunate events including murder, and the burning of a police precinct. Even as late as 2022 I had people asking me if the city was still burning, and if we were affected. Um, no? It was basically safe as it was before the protests started, as soon as it ended.
      History will judge the complicit.

        Yes, exactly this!

The only time it made me pause is when I saw one of the guys be taken by total surprise when he mentioned a cash discount (as I was writing him a $2k check) and then I said “oh well in the case, be right back” and ran upstairs to get cash. It wasn’t a regular contractor we use and his reaction just gave us weird vibes.

So now I know to ask this question over the phone ahead of time so it can appear as I planned for it rather than just always keeping that much cash on hand.

I also learned you can write a check out to “Cash”; our gardener accepts this the same as cash payment. Maybe others knew this but that was new to me!

I never thought about keeping cash in my car but now I may hide some just in case. I'm more concerned about my car being stolen and there went the cash too. But I guess maybe $100 max might be useful in an emergency.

Edit to add, I keep a $29 airtag in my car in case it gets stolen.

Uh-oh. Looks like I've started something with keeping a few bills in the car Just remember, don't forget about it before you sell/trade the car at some point in the future.

I actually thought I had an envelope with $200 in the compartment with my jack on the Frontier. I turned the truck over looking for it the night before I traded it in to no avail. Maybe it was never there, maybe someone with a flat tire one day will be pleasantly surprised.
