This happened to us once. DD was in *pre-school*. It was her second year at the school. Tuition is paid monthly but they make you sign a contract at the beginning of the year. Due to some really tough circumstances we had to relocate mid-year. I fought tooth and nail trying to get out of having to pay December-May tuition, especially because the school had a waiting list and they were just going to fill her spot and get double paid - there was no financial loss to the school. SOOOO frustrating. Anyway I was pleading my case about how we really couldn't afford it and the lady made the mistake of saying well as long as you pay something every month we won't send you to collections and there is no interest. So I pay $10/mo on autopay. DD is now almost 10. It will be paid off when she's 16. I like to think every month when they receive my $10 check they cringe a little about giving me 12 years to pay $1,400.

ETA: sorry about your son. Is there any loophole you can explore regarding the fact that they aren't providing the service you agreed to since your son is not attending a safe, productive school environment? If he's being bullied, he can't do well and excel.

I took my cats in for their check up. The bill was $550 and that doesn't include any vaccines. The old cat needed lab work and the young cat has a mast cell tumor and some dental problems, so the bill was just for blood work and a biopsy. Her surgery for the teeth and tumor was yesterday, which was another $1,000. I found two more bumps on my dog that seem to be growing, so I will have them check them out at her next appt, which is the 16th.

Those damn coins are still giving me fits. Now he wants all new coin holders and a new computer because the old cases have some chemical in them and the laptop is too slow to catalog the coins. I told him he can buy whatever he wants if he sells enough coins to pay for it, which did not go over well. He is getting a small bonus in a few weeks that I had earmarked for a new mattress for our daughter and savings toward a new car, but I'm sure it is already spent in his mind on coin crap.

My parents and sister are staying with us while their floors are refinished. I also had my two nieces stay for a few days, so the house was full. I am astonished at how much it costs to feed 8 people. I'm also amazed at how much coffee my parents drink. I've already blown through 2 months worth of coffee, and we still have several days to go. I'm so tired! As soon as I clean up breakfast, it is time to start cooking for lunch, and then dinner.

Add up the cost of school registration, the exchange students, and back to school clothes that my daughter is already starting to outgrow, and it has been very expensive these few weeks.
Aww sorry you're having a rough time, hang in there!

Your posts about your DH crack me up though, cause they remind me of me!

The saga continues. One of the aquarium pumps malfunctioned and my husband came home to am estimated 30 gallons of dirty water on our carpet two days ago (I was out doing back to school shopping that day). Now he wants to remove all of the carpeting on the first floor and put in hardwood, probably because my parents are doing the same thing at the moment and it looks nice. And of course, he wants to just take the money out of our magical savings account that always seems to have enough money in it for whatever pops into his head. We just replaced the carpeting last year, but I can't stand knowing that there was 30 gallons of fish poop on my carpet, even though we shampooed what we could. I'm going to have to spend an entire day taking down a 150 gallon tank and moving it just so I can get a pro to come in and steam clean it. I'm also out another $100 or so to replace the pump.

I'm seriously considering moving the tank to our family room and cutting a hole in the wall to reach the laundry room sink. Right now, I'm using an office chair to wheel a 5 gallon bucket from one side of the house to the other to dump dirty water, and it takes a lot of my time and energy.

The good news is that the dog's lumps were just "old beagle lumps", but I found some ugly looking growth on her tail now, and the cat won't take her antibiotics. I'm going to have to pay for another vet visit to get the new growth biopsied and a shot for the darn cat.

"And of course, he wants to just take the money out of our magical savings account that always seems to have enough money in it for whatever pops into his head." My hubby tends to do that as well. He can go months with no money from his work coming in and then seems to think we should have a certain amount of money set aside for things. 'Magical accounts' is sure the name for it. And I have a bunch of different accounts as well! It is the only way I stay sane! Most of the money for long stretches is off of money that I bring in so it does tick me off when he 'needs' something that we can't afford.

That's why my spending is driven by a spreadsheet that divides the savings account(s) by category.

Maybe you should split your magical savings account into multiple "named" savings accounts, and then point him at minuscule balance of the "Home Remodeling" account. "Not enough money for new floors!"

I sold another book on Amazon today that ended up costing me money. I need to go through my inventory and pull off all the books like that. I thought I had taken care of that but obviously not. Amazon's fees are obscene - $3.71 in fees on a $2.14 item. After shipping costs, I'm losing $0.75 plus the cost of the envelope and label.

So it turns out that we wasted all of the money we spent on our dog. Two days after her oncologist declared her cancer free, a large lump popped up less than an inch from the original tumor. And I mean it actually popped up. It wasn't there one minute and suddenly I notice a large lump, just like the first time. The lumps on her chest and side are also much larger and everything I have read indicates that this is systemic, just as I suspected. They said the next step is to amputate the leg, but we have decided to let things play out naturally unless someone can actually prove to me that this is not systemic. Her personality just isn't the type to survive at all costs. She is more of a "I want to die with prime rib in my mouth" kind of dog. We were not able to see our usual vet when this happened and I'm starting to think the oncologist was not notified even though I was told they would be sent an update. I'm going to give the oncologist a call on Monday and see what they say, but I'm not expecting good news.

Also, I'm pretty disappointed that our room rate dropped significantly right before our stay and the hotel refused to adjust the bill. They acted offended that I would even ask. It was almost $300 cheaper, so of course I'm going to ask about it. I eventually got a $100 credit, but I'm not exactly happy about it. I thought it was normal to adjust the room rate if someone asks, especially since I had a print out of the adjusted rate.

So we put our dog to sleep on the 31st. My mouth dropped open when I saw the bill. Over $800!!! They charged us over $300 just to put her to sleep and the rest was for some tests prior to realizing that there was nothing to be done. We just paid $1,300 not 2 weeks ago for other tests and we were not told that there were tumors all over her, just one on the liver and spine. We were told to expect about 3 to 6 months. Surprise!

December has been nothing but medical bills. I am particularly pissed off because my primary dr said I had a rotator cuff tear and to see a certain doctor to get an MRI or ultrasound (I can't remember if I was supposed to get an ultrasound and the dog was supposed to get the MRI or what at this point). The specialist takes a regular xray, tells me it is a frozen shoulder, gives me a cortisone shot and orders physical therapy. After a few sessions, the therapist tells me that the dr I went to is known to give out frozen shoulder diagnoses for everything and I probably have a tear and will need to see a different doctor after my PT is done. And this was only after I specifically asked her because my shoulder has not improved. So now I am wasting copays and will have to meet my deductibles when I have the MRI instead of just getting one in Dec when my deductibles were met. While this was happening, my cat whacked me in the face with her tail and scratched both of my corneas. My optometrist's office had me see someone I had never met before, and she gives me the wrong prescription. Meanwhile, it feels like I'm pouring salt in my eye and a cloud-looking thing develops right above my bottom lashes in one eye and I realize that I can't see where the cloud is. My regular dr tells me to stop using the old rx and use a different one, and to come back in 3 days. So now that is $60 in copays for my eye, plus the cost of the rx I can't use and the new one. Then he tells me that the inclusion is healed enough to start using the old rx again. I threw it away thinking that I wouldn't use it. So now another prescription is in order! I suppose I should feel lucky, because I actually thought I lost my eye 2 weeks prior to all of this when my giant, fat ass cat fell on my face while I was sleeping and tore my face up. She stepped on my eye and I heard a squish and all I could see was blood. Yet another morning where I wake up screaming. All the money I wasted on wrinkle creams! I now have 3 scars around my eye. I'm still missing some eyelashes.

I also lost about $200 because I bought a bunch of stuff for my daughter and nieces and nephew to bake Christmas cookies, including aprons for the kids. Long story short, asking my mother to pick up my daughter from school when my cat sliced up my face set off a chain of events and now I don't speak to the entire side of my family, so no kids came to bake cookies with my daughter. I think I'm just going to donate the Costco bags of flour and sugar to a shelter, but I have no need for tiny little aprons.

On the plus side, our jerk Koi tried to jump out of the tank to scare me and tore a big hole in her head. I just happened to have all of the stuff needed to sedate and treat her. She is doing great so far, and I'm really grateful that she didn't try to jump out of the holding pen. A two foot long fish would have broke my beautiful face if it smacked me. Finally! A cheap pet fix!

Maybe by next year, you can do the cookie baking! After years of my whole family including my mom not talking to me about 2 years ago she called and sort of apologized, but things will never, ever be the same. She just turned 89 and has lots of physical problems and I'm in my 60s and have lots of physical problems and neither of us can tolerate the distance of going to either's house so I know basically, I will probably never get to see her again or she won't see me either. If she dies and depending on where the funeral is, etc. would be, I doubt that I can go to that as well. Try not to let this happen to you and your family! I hope you have a much better year!

Tax loss harvested -40k from all my stinkers. Trump's trade war certainly rocked my stocks, but I rather not having to pay 10-13k of taxes AND live with the paper loss.

Pissed at Ortho because I'm unable to figure out what we owe. I have been waiting since Wednesday for a bill explanation. Monday and still not done. I called Delta Dental and they sent me emailed PDF of what's been paid.

Also went to podiatrist for the plantar fascitis. I am waiting to get custom orthotics. But had to call insurance myself and was told they weren't sure if it was covered. So I gave the codes and am waiting. The office said it would take longer for them to call then me. When did insurance become so difficult?

                          >> When did insurance become so difficult?<<

This may sound strange, but for me, health insurance became easy once I got Medicare and AARP United Healthcare as my supplement. It is still hard with hubby on the Obama care and my DIL was saying that the insurance that they got for the baby isn't covering anything as there are only like two places where they live that will take it, and they live in a large capital city! They just found out the baby that was born with a birthmark on her arm is growing fast and the medication she needs and monitoring it the insurance won't cover!

My wife went downstairs to do laundry this morning and called up to me that something was beeping. I went down with a pretty good idea of what it was and I was correct. Apparently, last night when she went to the freezer to get something out for dinner, she accidentally didn't fully close the door. The beeping was the temperature alarm which had obviously been sounding all night (it isn't very loud). Everything in the freezer was defrosted and all but a few items had to be trashed. I have no idea of the monetary value of everything. Probably $100 or more. I guess we need to do some shopping and cooking this weekend to restock.
