  • Question for women

    Men you've been warned!

Ladies what do you normally spend on a bra? What brand? Price? Where do you buy it?

Yesterday I went to Nordstrom recommended by like 4 friends as the best place in the area to fit bras and they did an amazing job. The bra was fantastic. I bought 1. But it was $72.. I mean seriously. It was an Natori bra. But I had a $30 gift card so out of Pocket it was $40.

I checked online and I ordered a couple from Amazon for $38 and $44 anyway but not the exact style. Size but not style.

Seriously this is the most I've ever paid for a bra is nordstrom but even the amazon. Usually I buy cheap stuff for like $20 but they last maybe 1 year and even handwashing they don't hold the shape well. i'm wondering if you buy the expensive bras then it'll last longer?

Do any of you do expensive bras? Or what is expensive to you? What do you spend? I told my husband and he was like "OMG bras cost that much?" I've never told him and he's never asked because well he probably thinks they cost like $5 (he did). He thought it was like underwear.

    Share your stories please.

What is your opinion on the nordstrom bra vs a cheaper $20 bra. Does it feel better, look better under clothes, better support, etc etc?

Im a dude so I dont know a single thing about them but ive seen talking heads on tv saying how most women wear the incorrect bra size, yada yada yada.

Kohl's has some pretty good bras in the $30 range. They have 2 for 1 sales several times a year.

I've never paid that much, but I would if it fit well and was made well. And then if it lasted a couple months, I would go back and buy more. I'm pretty chesty, so nothing fits great. I also try to stay active, so no bra is going to last me a year even with hand washing. I just bought some from Kohls a couple months ago. With ebates, sales, and coupon codes, it came out to about $13 per bra.

I would happily pay 72 dollars for a bra I knew would fit well for awhile and last multiple washings, but as I have had such mixed responses to bras even with fittings and help (they feel awesome in the store, but an hour later they don't fit right -- or a day later and I have sores in my armpits) I tend to stick to a slightly lower range because I have thrown so many away. I tend to shop outlets for bras to get good quality ones but not at full price, and when I find one I like I go all out.

I have found I really like Betsey Johnsen bras in that they fit me well, I know my size, and they maintain their shape with delicate washings. I tend to by them at outlets or at Nordstroms. I have paid anything between 10-40 for them, but I mostly buy them on sale.

I've spend a lot of money on trial an error here, and it is super frustrating, I feel your pain!

when I was working I finally decided I'd had enough of bras where the straps could not be tightened enough to not fall down my shoulders, nothing fit right, cheap or expensive. So I went to a family owned small bra shop and got fitted by them and found Le Mystere bras. What a difference! I looked so much better in my shirts. But $72. I found them in clearance colors on the website Bare Necessities for half that. I've gained weight since then and don't know what size I would be so I've just been wearing bras I get on sale and with coupons from Kohls. But a good bra makes a big difference if you're larger on top IMHO.

takes more then what they feel like in a fitting room. I order from a company called thirdlove online they ask many questions about what you like in a bra and what you have had the biggest problem with.
they send you a bra to LIVE in for 30 days and if you don't like it you send it back ... I thought what is the risk it fits very well forget I am wearing sometimes and it was $68

I went online and ordered it for $36 and $42 and been wearing it. And they feel amazing. I returned the $72 and felt a bit guilty but seriously even $40 for a bra feels indulgent. I haven't felt this nice. It's not cutting, supportive, I can't explain why it feels so much better than the cheaper ones. Perhaps I'll stick to this depending on how long these hold up. I've usually bought I'll admit at an outlet or something cheaper and I suffer through it. Most of my friends the same. But the few that recommended nordstrom admit they pay a lot but once they get fitted they stick with it and it has worked. Of course the bras are expensive but they said they do seem to last longer. we'll see.

I'm a single guy and wash my clothes at the laundromat. I often see women delicately folding their bras or hanging it neatly on the push cart hanger thing. Now I understand why they take so much care of their bras, those things are ridiculously expensive. I just stack my underwear in one stack, pants in another, and shirts in another stack, and I'm out.

LAL - I want to thank you for starting this thread. I checked pricing on Amazon on scored a 2-pack for $20 (I typically pay $17-19 each). Colors are not the ones I would typically choose, but for $10 each I'll happily wear them!

The most expensive bra I ever bought was for my wedding 15 1/2 years ago. That was fun. I already had bought my dress, but it was a princess seam and I needed something to hold me up higher. So, I figured Victoria's Secret should have some great bras do they not? I went into their store at the mall and told them I was looking for a bar and in what size. The clerk looked at me as if I had tracked in some dog pooty. We don't carry that size she said to me which sort of dumbfounded me as every commercial I had ever seen for them the ladies looked pretty well endowed. She told me to go to Lane Bryant. I went I managed to find one bra that would work and it cost $30. I wore it to get married in and it came off the minute I got home. The most painful thing I had ever worn. I had it and some other clothing set aside for the thrift store and hubby thought it was a bag of garbage and burned it so I guess I really did burn my bra! I also look more carefully at those Victoria models and realize that they are smaller chested than I used to be when I was teased in college for being flat chested!

I can't tolerate going to stores and trying things on so I did finally find a Playtex bra that I liked and got about 6-7 of them and a good thing as well as the last brochure I got they were apparently discontinued. I wash mine on delicate and hang to dry. I have found that hanging all my undies as well as delicate clothes they have been lasting ages longer. By washing on delicate and then hanging on a dryer rack in the bathroom has helped preserve the life of all my clothes including my support socks that I wear in winter. We built the bathroom to be handicap accessible so it is rather large and can tolerate me turning it into a Chinese laundry at times.

I'm at the point of getting dressed only a couple of times a week which is making the bras I have last longer. My grandmother never wore one in her life and she had something like 13 kids and didn't die for lack of a bra and I figure I won't either.

Once you know the style number of the bra you want, you can set up an alert on ebay for that number and get emails when new ones are posted. The bra I wear is discontinued, but there are still some new with tags ones floating around and I buy them whenever one comes up for a good price. Also there are many lightly used ones. I know it sounds skeevy, but I know myself I have bought bras and not liked them and not really worn them so I assume these are the same. I've bought a couple of them that come and look brand new.

I can understand buying a used bra if it is in decent shape. My first one was a hand-me-down. The problem is those that think anything they don't want anymore is still worth something. We have town near us that is financailly very repressed, but we were yardsaling there and came upon a ale with OLD bras for sale. I'm not talking old-vintag bras, or old but not owrn bras, I'm talking completely worn out, floppy as an old sock, not a bit of stretch left (not enough to even think of using it for a slingshot) to it and a dingy grayish color from years I suspect of hard work. The had priced them for 25 cents a piece. Let's just say that was highway robbery! Although not particularly bras, this is common enough to see at some yard sales - worn out things that makes you suspect everything else at the sale is junk as well!

Your idea is a good one. When you first get the bra and decide you like it, most clothing articles including bras have a code on the tag that corresponce with the maker and model number. Write that down and don't lose it.

This thread started with the prices of bras and how much to pay. I don't know what the average price would be but once while watching What not to wear, a woman was looking at panties that were $90/pair I can't think that these panties were worth $90 each. $10 would still be a stretch. Just think of what that spare $80 multiplies by each time you made a conservative purchase, could have been put into investments. What it would be worth when you got older when you no longer care about brand names and all you care about is comfort?
