  • How to save on streaming services

In November 2021, we signed up for Hulu with their Black Friday deal of $0.99/month for a year. That ended and last billing cycle we were up to full price of $7.99/month. We made sure to finish the couple of shows we were in the middle of and I logged in today to cancel our subscription.

The first choice that popped up was the option to just pause our subscription for up to 12 weeks. We wouldn't be billed during that time and service would resume (at full price) after that. I think that's a great option if you aren't currently watching anything on the service but still want to have it down the line.

I still wanted to cancel so I moved on to that screen. That's when a special offer popped up to pay only $2.99 for the next 6 months (and then full price after that). I also thought that was a good deal, though we still don't need Hulu at this point, so I cancelled.

If you like the services you have and just want to see if you can trim the cost a bit, it's worth trying to see if you can pause or get a discount offer for staying with them. It might be automatic online, like this was, or you may need to call them, but it can definitely be worth a try.

Sling TV had a similar promotion when I cancelled a screen came up saying "wait" before I cancelled and they offered 1/2 price but I can't recall for how long but I cancelled although it was a good deal at 1/2 off. A good strategy for any service might be to give the company a "head fake" and go through process of cancelling (without cancelling) to see what offers they come up with.

NetFlix had increased their subscription cost a few months back from $12 to $15 (iirc). But at the bottom corner of the screen there was an "other options" option which listed $10 per month. Single device and lower resolution, but I don't have an unlimited data plan for my phone so I'm not watching hours on it and my TV is a 720, so higher detail is pointless.

Another way to potentially save is by looking at your credit card(s) to see if there are any offers for streaming services. Add them to your card. Make the purchase. In a few weeks you should see a credit to your account.

I’m hoping to see $20 for paramount plus and 20% from Disney Plus (max of $16).

YMMV and pay attention to the details.

there are also other offers you can save to your credit card from other stores, etc.

One of our cards does the quarterly 5% cash back categories and one quarter is always streaming services so that helps a little, too.
