I'll have to ask him next time I speak with him.

I just found out that my 80 year old coworker passed away. He worked all his life and never retired. Sometimes I wonder if he might have been better off retiring but maybe he might not have lived as long as he did working which kept him busy and gave him a sense of purpose, who knows. We never know when our time will come to an end.

Oh, I am very sorry to hear that. It is possible that he enjoyed his job and his decision to continue working had nothing at all to do with money. He may have simply preferred to spend his time working.

Very true. Some people work by choice. They like what they do. They like the socialization. It gets them out of the house and keeps them occupied. Plus they get paid. I'm certainly not one of those people. I'm very happy working as little as I can get away with and I have way more to do than I have time for even only working 8 hours/week at this point.

QMM, sorry to hear about that.

        * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
        * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
        * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I'm in the same camp as disneysteve and if I could retire today I would. I can find things to do to keep myself busy. But I can understand Petunia's point as well.

Vin Baker had an incredible 13-year NBA career. Sadly, he lost his fortune in retirement, struggling to adjust to the major life change. Today, Baker works as a manager at Starbucks and is a minister at his father's church. Baker knows how working at a Starbucks might look to people on the outside, but has come to terms with that, saying, "I lost a fortune. I had a great talent and lost it. For the people on the outside looking in, they're like 'Wow.' For me, I'm 43 and I have four kids. I have to pick up the pieces."

According to the internet he is an assistant coach for the Bucks. I wonder if that’s in addition to Starbucks. I have no idea what coaches earn.

                      • I'm at $559,000. I think I'd be closer to your numbers if I had not gotten divorced.

                            As of this moment, $3,872,634.46.

I have not updated my spreadsheet since selling $100,000 worth of stock funds yesterday morning so the true number is just slightly different. We also had a $25,000 CD mature yesterday which is now in the settlement fund.

Purely invested money is currently ~$1.8M, not including ~$350k I expect to net from selling our current home (just listed, proceeds will be invested since we're effectively renting while living overseas).
