I've never been able to pull the trigger on getting a gym membership, because I'd want a gym with a pool, and gyms with pools aren't cheap. $40/person/month for a gym with a pool is pretty good, although I would have hoped an employee discount would have made it even cheaper.

I've considered just swimming at the high school pool, which is $5/day. But, the hours are after the swim team is done with practice, by which point I'm home and can't get the motivation to go back out to swim.

If your wife is mostly interested in classes, perhaps it better to find some classes she can take without having to join anything. My local community center offers a variety of classes in yoga, aerobics, martial arts, and such. You're unlikely to find anything that requires large equipment, like spinning. I took a few classes in the spring, and I really enjoyed it. I'm sitting out the summer because I started to get really busy as the weather warmed up. But, I'm looking forward to starting up again in the fall.

She doesn't only want classes, though she did look into one local place that just does classes. That would have ended up costing more than the gym membership. She is also interested in some of the water classes, so the pool is a benefit there.

We both walk/run but it's hard for us to go outside and walk together because I'm much faster than her. With the gym, we can get side by side treadmills and walk "together" which would be nice.

It sounds like the $80/month isn't a bad price for what it includes. We'll try and get over this week with our guest passes to check it out for real.

$27 every 3 months for a gym right in the building I work, so I am there every day at lunchtime. No pool, but there are classes (which I don't use) and a good variety of machines and weights. Near where I live is the $10/mo. Planet Fitness. No pool, but I think they have everything else. $80/mo. for 2 is the super discount rate???? That may be ok in the center of some big cities, but nowadays that seems mighty steep to me for most places.
Don't torture yourself, thats what I'm here for.

We belong to our local Y which is fairly new and pay $64/mo for our family of 5. I usually just drop it down to single coverage for just me 9 mos out of the year cause the kids don't use it when school is in session and that's $42/mo.

The monthly fee doesn't cover any classes, those are extra, which burns me up. But I don't do classes anyway so it's fine. We have 2 indoor pools and hot tubs that are included in the monthly fee. An outdoor pool, just for the 3 summer months runs a one time fee of $100 for the family, so I did that this year too.

I've also at times put my Y membership on vacation for June, July & August and use our schools outdoor track and don't pay my membership fee. I'll then start back up in September. We can put our membership on vacation 3 mos out of the year.

This year because of wanted to get the outdoor pool pass I had to keep the family membership through the summer. I find I make myself go workout because I'm paying for it, so it's a good thing for me!

I work in a police dept but I'm not a cop and they have a very nice cardio room and separate weight room that I get to use during my breaks usually around midnight so I usually get the facility all to myself (I work four 10 hour days). On my days off I jog around my neighborhood (1 mile).

This is one of our biggest expenses next to rent, food, and medical. My husband and I both belong to a local weight lifting gym where we also get training. We pay $258 a month, some of which is taxes, and that includes the training. My husband goes 6 days a week and I go 3 days a week.

I hate cardio machines and never use them, but my husband does use them regularly. We run outside from about March to late September. I also have taken boxing classes at $10 per class in the past, but I haven't picked it back up since the surgery. I plan to go again once I'm done running for the year.

I pay 100 per month for Muay Thai classes, and try to go 2-3 times per week. That's also more of a social gathering since its a small group of members, with the owner being a friend.

I also pay 31 per month for LA Fitness. I plan on canceling this month as I haven't been using for the last 6+ months, and going to my new gym at my work.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Planet Fitness, 20.00 per month gets you the upgrade membership that allows you to use all the Planet Fitness locations. Good for people that travel alot. Also allows you to use their Hydro massage tables, very nice The member can also bring a guest with them at no additional cost.

If you are a blue cross blue shield member, you should be elligble for "healthy ways prime". It's a pretty cool program that goes under the radar pretty frequently.

By getting the membership, you are granted access to thousands of GYMs. I believe it is national wide, but I'm not sure (I'm in Michigan). The cost is only $25 a month per person. And It gives me an automatic membership to just about every Gym around us here in Detroit except for Lifetime fitness. Around here, Healthyways Prime membership allows me to use Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Fitness 19, Body Rocks, and a few others that I don't bother to find out, as there are way too many gyms around.

It is a cool program, and with the massive variety it offers, it can be a really solid program to consider.

just google, "Healthyways Prime". Worth checking into for a cheaper multi-Gym membership to allow maximum flexibility on your choices.

So it turns out that not only do I get a nice discount at the gym but our benefits plan also reimburses me for part of my cost. I need to find out the details but haven't been able to get through to the benefits department yet.

But I got my paycheck today and there is a $21.60 reimbursement for gym membership. If I get that monthly, that's pretty darned good since I'm only paying $31/month to belong. That lowers our total to $58.40/month.

I've paid anywhere from $10 to $100 a month for a gym membership... Over the past two years, I've lost a little more than 70 pounds (still some to go) so fitness has been a huge part of my life and finding the right fit for me was important.

Now, however, I pay nothing. The apartment complex has a gym that is "free" and I have a ton of places to run nearby (as well as some friends that bring me as a guest to their gym from time-to-time). It all depends, I think, on your current need and the resources available.

My blue cross blue shield insurance used to reimburse $150/year for a gym membership. Was nice while it lasted. Then my employer went to Aetna and we switched to my wifes government blue cross plan. Aetna sucked.

LOL. We have an IT outsourcing contract with Aetna, so they're our insurance provider.
