doesnt a lot of hotels have 2 tier pricing? with and without cancellation? of course without cancellation is a lot cheaper.

airlines could adopt a similar model, charge people less that willing to accept without cancellation. If someone wants to book and be able to cancel over the next couple months, charge them a premium

Sometimes. I've often found that the gap between the regular price and the non-refundable price isn't big enough to take the risk, though I have on occasion especially when booking very close to the travel date.

As a general rule, though, I book the best rate at the time and I just go in every couple of weeks and check if the rate has dropped. If it has, I make a new reservation and cancel the old one. I've probably saved a couple thousand dollars by doing that over the years.

Yeah I think it kinda depends. I've seen some that were 20-30% difference.

Generally for hotels in popular destinations, it's usually better to book far in advance. Prices only skyrocket as the date gets closer and the hotels have few rooms left.

You can do this on Southwest using points. I book tickets one-way so it is easier to change. If the flight price goes down, you can re-book and get points refunded. I guess you can do it with dollars also, but then you have credits that expire. The points just go back in your account.

More on the 60 minutes piece.

Coincidently Southwest came on the news today about a passenger killed mid-flight when an engine blew and cracked a window which depressurized and sucked a woman half way through the window which killed her, very tragic.
