  • You really should be driving an electric car

Energy Secretary Granholm told White House reporters Tuesday that if you drive an electric car, fuel shortages "would not be affecting you, clearly." All of us internal combustion engine folks are so yesterday.

So there you have it. If you drive an electric car, all would be well and this cyber attack wouldn't matter.

Now if the cyber terrorists hack your local power plant...

Or low-tech criminals vandalize charging stations, which has happened already in various places.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

We can't go off internal combustion engines 100% right now, today. If we did that the economy would collapse. Any transition to electric will be just that - a gradual transition.

I'll bet EV owners near the pipeline shutdown were feeling pretty validated in the last few days, though.

Cybersecurity defense needs to increase for all critical infrastructure, and I'm glad the current administration understands that. Private enterprise is painstakingly discovering that they can no longer ignore threats; the risk is too great. That is creating a lot of jobs in this country, and it presents another opportunity for the US to be the leader.
        History will judge the complicit.

Judging from the utterly stupidity of the Secretary's comment, I'm not convinced that the current administration even knows where electricity comes from.

apparently not that coal is what mostly produces electricity. Anyway though EV owners by the pipeline must be vindicated. but they get their day when vandals rip off charging.

I suppose that there is some puffed up sense of pride from some EV drivers in areas effected by the gas shortage, it's probably minimal and short lived.

It's probably the same feeling that I get when the power goes out and my neighbors sit in their cold dark house while my generator keeps us warm and well lit.

Not so much a point and laugh feeling, more just relief and thank goodness I am prepared.

When you can get a 737 off the ground on electricity you will have my attention.
Electric vehicles are a niche, and there are places where they make sense. There are also a whole lot of places where electric vehicles aren't going to be practical, so don't look for internal combustion engines to go by the wayside anytime real soon.

I think it's a good sized niche. If you live in the suburbs in a detached single family home that you own and your daily driving consists of a short commute to the office, or you work from home, or take the kids to school and sports and go grocery shopping, an EV might be a great option for you. You'll still keep the ICE van or SUV for family vacations, towing the trailer or other gear, and going on road trips, but using the EV around town might be the way to go. I could certainly see us owning one for local use even now. As they currently exist, I wouldn't use it for travel due to the charging limitations and inconvenience, but that could easily change in the future as the vehicles get better and charging becomes quicker and more readily available.

What if the pipe line carries natural gas to the power plant that supplies your electricity for the car?

What if the servers that are attacked control the substation that distributes power to your house?

Are we suggesting boats, trains, and planes should all run on electricity?

There was also a comment I heard along the lines of "this is a private business problem we're not interested". 9/11 was a private business problem too. Maybe no one died this time, but this sort of attach should be classified as terrorism and the FBI and the CIA should ID the criminals and extradite them.

And this is where I fail to understand the true anonymity of the of cryto. If Colonial Pipeline purchased $5M in Bitcoin and transferred it to the account number used by DarkSide, this is recorded on the block chain. Are there not tools to see where the funds in DarkSide's account go? (I should state it is my assumption they paid in Bitcoin, I have not read this).

All I know is, if there's some kind of end world scenario, I much rather have Solar+battery storage+electric car than to rely on any kind of working infrastructure to keep my house/car running.

The technology exist to go completely off grid, not relying on any externalities to provide you with the service. I don't care if a natural gas pipe line exploded or a coal mine collapsed. I can even get electricity from the sun during a nuclear winter. The only thing I need to defend is my property.

                            Haha, no problem.

Lets just say battery storage+solar has a 2 year waiting list in Cali during the power outtage+raging fires painting the sky orange. Those with solar+battery storage+electric car had absolutely no problem even when with all the ashe in the sky. There are youtube videos about the performance of their house during what looks to be world end scenario.
