DH and I are debating what to do. We already purchased treats to hand out. We have a couple of possible scenarios. One is to put a table at the end of our drive and lay out treat bags that trick-or-treaters could grab as they walk by (but, the risk with this option is that the first few folks through might take all the treats...). The other idea is a candy chute that would keep us socially distanced from the trick or treaters.. This idea actually sounds like it might even be fun to do without a pandemic.

We bought candy and put a few pieces each into little snack bags. We will put out a table and space out the bags and replenish as needed. If it’s a nice night we might sit outside at a distance to say hi and make sure nobody takes more than their share.Steve
* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

What I'm really concerned about (and I actually made a Facebook post about this yesterday) is all of the people refusing to change their plans and still hosting or attending Halloween parties as well as already planning their big Thanksgiving dinners. None of that stuff should be happening. No Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, or New Years gatherings. All that's going to accomplish is to further spike the record high number of COVID cases that the US is experiencing. As a frontline healthcare worker, it stresses me out and makes all of us terrified about what the next few months will look like forus. We're already seeing the rise in cases and it's only going to get a lot worse between now and the end of the winter.Steve

My husband and I haven't done much for Halloween for a while. We don't live in an area where trick-or-treaters are likely to frequent (rural/remote) so no reason to decorate or get crazy. It will probably be just us with ONE bag of candy on Saturday night watching a good halloween flick in front of the tv.
For a while there we were attending Halloween parties at the local watering hole and going with some really authentic costumes. Not this year...wouldn't dare gather in that kind of space.History will judge the complicit.

We're mostly just doing a series of Trunk or Treat things for our boys over the next few days. We'll probably still take them out on Halloween night, but not sure how many homes will participate this year.
We haven't made specific plans for how to hand out treats while still being courteous for those super concerned about it .... The idea of using a table to set out little bags or piles of treats is a good one. We normally sit on the driveway every year anyway (I hate doorbells), but simply that (by sitting outside with the likelihood of a mild breeze) will help to mitigate exposure as well.
As I've said before, many folks here aren't terribly concerned by it though (probably >70% of people), because COVID just hasn't been a major factor for our little town (~15k people). Even the "spike" we're experiencing right now numbers in just a handful of new positive cases daily. So I expect Halloween to go off somewhat normal, just with some reasonable mitigation measures in place. Probably alot of little doctors/nurses running around wearing surgical masks... Lol

How did your Halloween go?
We ended up putting the treats in pumpkin treat bags and laying them out on a table so the trick or treaters could come by and pick up a treat bag. (I still think the candy chute would be fun, but we ran out of time with the engineering of it.)
We adopted Disney Steve's idea to only put a few bags out at once so they could be spaced out. The kids were on the honor system--and they did very well (we did not run out of treat bags). We only had about 1/2 the normal number of trick or treaters. (I estimate about 65)

I have a 13 year old who wanted to go trick or treating. I made the decision to allow her to go with one friend and wear a mask when she was within 6 feet of anyone outside (which rarely happened according to her, as everyone had tables set up outside and kept distance or weren't there). When her friend came into our house and when she went into hers, each kept their mask on.
We had our candy in a bowl outside so they didn't have to ring the bell and be close to anyone. It worked out well I think. I was glad to see little kids going house to house in their COVID protective masks, happy to pick up candy.
DS is right about Thanksgiving, Xmas, etc. These are indoor gatherings without social distancing or masks..will be a nightmare.

To be honest, I really liked doing the table. It was far easier. I might suggest we do that every year.Steve

We didn't end up doing much of anything.... Stressful day with our boys fighting us at every turn, so they lost the privilege of going trick or treating, and for handing stuff out, we just left a bowl outside -- neither of us had the patience to deal with anyone else's kids either. I don't think alot of kids were really out in our part of the neighborhood, as our relatively small bowl never even got half-emptied (we didn't pay attention to really know though). Of course, what we put out for handouts isn't candy -- we tend to do fruit snacks, glow sticks, crayons, and other little toys like that. We're probably never as popular of a house on halloween.

We did not go to any Halloween parties. But you know, we weren't invited to any this year! Maybe folks thought twice about having them, or maybe we have just become less popular.
For Thanksgiving, I have already told family members that we are staying home by ourselves this year. I am uncertain what other family members will choose to do.

We left candy out and went to around 10 houses with the same group of kid we pod with. We had done a neighborhood email thread and asked if neighbors wanted to participate by leaving candy out. Some did and knew us and the kids. So we hit about 10 houses. The kids got a ridiculous haul per house. We had movie theater candy at some. Others were doling out handfuls basically trying to dump as much as possible

My roommate asked if I had any candy (hardly ever), as our neighbor's little kids were going to their closest doors for town homes. For last minute scrambling, I gave them the last of my Fit Crunch bars and trail mix. Overall I was glad they got to experience a little bit of Halloween, even if it's been minimized.
That night I ended up at a friend's place to drop off some tools and had a beer with them, which i wouldn't say was a party between the three of us. It was nice to catch up since they hardly go out.
As for the upcoming holidays for rest of year, i won't be upset if we don't do gatherings. Just less stress and planning to deal with (yeah, I'm Scrooge)."I'd buy that for a dollar!"
