Just curious but does anyone here get food for free?
We are picking organic blackberries a few times a week. We hike to get to them (so get exercise) wading into the river. We do this 2-3 times a week in month of August to beginnning of September. The season is coming to a close. But blackberries here are about $3 a carton. Each trip we get about 10 cartons plus whatever we consume while there. Some summers more so I'll make jam but it always turns out as syrup. I think because I don't add as much sugar. So we use it as syrup.
We freeze the blackberries. They last about 6 months. Use them in our organic vegetable juice while juicing.
There is also an abandoned orchard about 15 mintues away. The pears are falling off of the trees and rotting on the ground. So we go pick the pears, cutting off the brown spots. Their are no trespassing signs but the owner said he doesnt mind. Signs are just to cover him from getting sued but he's happy someone can use them. They are tiny since he hasn't been watering them for at least 4 years. There is also miners lettuce growing like crazy here but I don't like the taste. And the homeless here grab the crawdads out of the streams but they are very little. They are in abundance but you need about 20 I am told to make a meal. My husband had them once, says they are delicious. He grew up really poor so their family did alot of things to save money.
