This is a good point. I have been busy applying money to things right now but I need to get out some cash to give to my wife for situations like that.

I guess if you always carried a surplus of cash you wouldn't run into that issue. Would you spend more if you had a card, or do you get what you want anyway Disneysteve? I don't know of many people who carry large amounts of cash just because. Most don't have it to be able to.

I tried using cash instead of a card before. I ended up spending more with cash because if I got out 20$ for food and I ran out of money to buy a combo at the end (maybe 3 or 4 dollars left) I would just use my card instead and the cash would go to something else.
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you're stupid and make bad choices.

If your nephew is a trustworthy guy and you frequently buy eggs from him, you could have given him the $20 as pre-payment for 10 dozen eggs.

Should tell your nephew to pick up a square credit card reader and start accepting credit cards!

        Assume this is a joke?

Why would it be a joke? If your nephew has a business and regularly sells his product, accepting credit/debit cards would avoid him running into this issue from all of the people who no longer carry cash.

Today, it's simple for anyone to accept credit cards. As long as you have a smartphone or tablet, it's a snap. My wife got a square reader for when she sews sewing or quilting items. Back in the day, when we sold collectibles, I would have loved to have had that option available to us.

When I have to swipe a credit card for farm fresh eggs from a family member, I'll quit buying them. Ridiculous. This is a $2.00 purchase.

His accepting CCs wouldn't mean you couldn't still pay cash. It would just be another option for times when he had a customer who didn't have cash or he didn't have change. I'm assuming you aren't his only customer.

The great thing about something like Square is that there is no cost to the merchant except when it gets used. He could have it for months and never touch it and it wouldn't cost him a penny.

As for it being a $2.00 purchase, that's irrelevant. I charge small purchases all the time.

I decided this weekend that I need to stash 4 or 5 Abe Lincolns in my wallet for mini emergencies. Like when you are at a cookout and they are taking up a collection for a beer run and the only cash you have on you is a lone $20 bill.

Much easier to just toss in a five then a twenty and ask for change.

We also attend a lot of fundraising events. Cash is needed for raffle tickets, auction items, 50/50, cash bar, etc.

most farmers markets use square now to allow people to shop. I know the guy at the farmers market who sharpened my knife used square. It's very useful. And well worth the business you get.
