  • How much cash do you keep in the house?

Since we are on a roll about wallets, how about your house?

We keep about $2k/ month; mainly for babysitters and small cash spends. No significant emergency cash in the house.

I hope I don't inadvertently post my address in the future to this site but $5000 in cash and another $5000 in silver and gold bullion. I know that I should store the precious metals in a vault or safe deposit box but I have larger pieces as well stored securely (approx. $40,000 worth). I keep the "smaller" pieces at home. Never know when I'll need the silver/gold to buy a roasted chicken or a loaf of bread in exchange for it. You know zombie apocalypse (lol).

What most would consider a substantial amount.

      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

Varies, but wouldn't be unusual to have $3-5,000

hmmm... interesting answers so far... whatever is in my wallet (assuming it is in the house).

Now, if a hurricane or something similar is forecasted, I might take the initiative to get some extra cash ($100) just in case stores are impacted by long term power outages, etc.

Are you stashing $50's/100's or smaller bills? I would lean towards smaller bills.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that you're Ha, ha, only serious.

We tend to be well stocked on food and gas, but we don't keep any cash beyond what we have in our wallets.

11k of my EF is stored in the safe, locked away safely. IDK why but I save more if I cash a big check and stick it in my EF in $100 bills that I can count. I keep some in the bank and probably should put all of it there.

Didnt realize quatermillionman was my FIL. He's the only one that says stuff like that...exchange gold for a chicken. Ill see you in 3 weeks when we head to Florida.

We may have $100 because the wife likes to have cash money on her. I keep 500 rounds of ammo and a pistol in house. Thats my bargaining chip.

to those with $x,000 cash at home... I'm guessing based on my time here, and familiarity with some of the individuals, that this is a small amount relative to your real wealth. Like me having $100 at home sitting around.

but the question that comes to mind is: how is this money working for you?

The rational answer should be that it gives them peace of mind.

Of course, that begs the questions:
                          • why does gives them peace of mind?
                          • what they're afraid of?

For QuarterMillionMan and 97guns the answer will be something like fear of the End of the World as We Know It and WROL.

There is nothing that says every dime needs to be working for you all the time.
For most, these amounts stashed away in cash are "play money".

Most who have large amounts of money...im talking in the $10,000+ range have that money in a safe because its off the books. At some point they were paid under the table for a job and cant just deposit that amount of money without raising red flags.

I dont blame them though...why should you pay taxes on money that has already been taxed. One of the biggest money sucking greedy scams uncle same forces on us...that and having to rent the land/house you live in...but we simply call that property tax and everyone is ok with it.
