  • What do you budget for movie rentals?

Last night I watched the Revenant. It was a long movie. It wasn't as good as Jeremiah Johnson, but it was pretty good and worthy of a 48 hour HD rental.

I watched the movie on demand via my cable company. $5.99 will be added to my cable bill next month for the movie. There are some other new releases I would like to watch, but I have to consider what to budget for them each month, how much.

How much do you budget each month for movies?

I don't necessarily watch enough movies each month to Netflix but I might reconsider.

For on demand? Never use it, so my budget for that type of movie is $0. I wait until films are available at no extra charge via DVD or streaming plans from Netflix or Amazon.

$0. We buy movies and series seasons on DVD so that the vagaries of corporate decision making doesn't prevent use from watching what we want when we want.

We subscribe to Netflix. That's $21/month. We use it nearly every day, though much more for TV shows than for movies.

We have On Demand service with our cable TV. I think we've only paid for a movie 2 or maybe 3 times in all the years we've had it.

just depends. Most months it is $0 but occasionally we rent or buy a movie.

For example, my son had a group of teens over the other night and they decided they wanted to watch a movie. I bought it for $15 on Amazon to stream.

That happens maybe twice per year.

            $0.

We have Netflix, which we originally used for "movie rentals" but now we use more as a cable replacement (and have for many years). But if you want to count it, that's $8/month for streaming.

Other than that, my husband always seems to have endless credits on google play. So we just rent movies through google play (for free).

what about going to red box, aren't they a buck and get popular hits?

I never use on demand except when I have enough video credits to get an Amazon movie which I haven't even tried yet because there's so much good free stuff to watch on Amazon and Netflix

$6 for an one on demand movie seems to make Netflix totally worth it in comparison

I use RedBox. Rent maybe 1-2 movies a month. So $2.36 or so.

Netflix: $8/month. In addition, we may stream one movie (~$4) a month, if Netflix doesn't have it.

                      $0.

Not much of a movie nut. I tend to just watch whatever comes on tv

                          We don't budget for movies.
I don't think it's a bad way, in your case, to watch something vs subscribing to netflix.

Although I'm a bit intrigued by your implications on a movie's running time... wouldn't a should movie (with all other things equal) be better than a long one? I.e. you waste less time getting the material?

A great way to save money is to borrow or check out movies from the library. We can check out up to 10 movies each week for our family. We can also borrow up to 30 books for 3 weeks! We can also renew the DVDs for one week and the books for an additional 3 weeks. Free movies for two weeks! We usually go to the library once or twice a month.

We also have Amazon Prime membership (we use Subscribe and Save) for $8.33 ($99.99 a year) and Netflix at $9.99 a month.

On occasion we'll buy or rent a movie from Amazon or Redbox.

Movie rentals aren't free at our library.
