at 25%, most restaurants are losing more money opening than closing. Better to stay closed and pray for rent relief from landlord.

That’s 25% indoors plus what they’ve already had outdoors. They opened outdoors on 6/15 and many places significantly expanded their outdoor seating. Some around here added 15-20 additional tables. I would think with all of that they can do okay. And the 25% is temporary and will get increased soon.

Besides, they’ve been open the entire time for takeout.

Restaurants are hard pressed to make money when at full capacity. Any mandated reduction is a killer.
I suspect most that stayed open for carry out only, only did so to keep a couple key employees on board. They were probably losing money regardless.

Many of the restaurants around here now have nearly as many tables since opening outdoor seating than they had before COVID. And that's with the insides still closed. If they can keep the outdoor space and add 25% of the indoor space, they may actually have more seating than they did before COVID.

Disneysteve question about the medical field and has doctor's appointments ramped up from your perspective? During the height of the pandemic my doctor in Los Angeles was slow but using telehealth and I could get an appointment any day and any time with a telephonic medical visit. Now with in-office visits back in action, during mid June when I called the earliest appointment I could get is July 22, whoa major shift from very slow during the height of the pandemic to now very busy and I have to wait over 1 month for the next available appointment. Are you seeing the same trend?

To be exact I called on June 16, and the earliest doctor's appointment that I could get is July 22.

During the height of the pandemic my doctor in Los Angeles was slow but using telehealth and I could get an appointment any day and any time with a telephonic medical visit.

The telehealth is a joke. Basically, you're phoning a doctor so they can write you an rx. We have a friend who is a doctor. She had to do it for a few months and said it was bogus. You cant see down peoples throats or ears. You cant listen to breathing. No temp check. Cant feel for swollen glands. ETc etc etc. Here's your rx...have a nice day.

Oh I agree that the restaurants were hit hard. Almost all stayed open to do takeout with a bare minimum of kitchen staff but except for places that were already mainly take out (Chinese, pizza), that can't have been profitable. Some tried to adapt by trimming menus and even selling grocery items so hopefully that brought in a little extra money and kept costs down.

At least now with outdoor dining, as long as it isn't raining they've got 10 or 20 tables or more full of diners. And they'll be getting back 25% of their indoor seating shortly.

I have no doubt that many restaurants will fail. The same for stores that were completely closed and also service businesses that couldn't operate. Just yesterday a friend found out that her daughter's dance studio wouldn't be reopening. Several businesses in our area have announced their permanent closures and I'm sure there will be more to come.

This. I can't imagine they are making a profit. Where we are there is almost no outdoor seating because the weather makes it stupid. Never really warm enough or dry enough. I can't blame them. but then again i"m curious because there are people going out to eat so maybe they are making a profit. Personally since I'm doing the whole 30 i'm skipping eating out in general. Goes great hand in hand with everything else.

The weather here isn't stopping everybody from eating out. All of the places I've passed have been packed. We just have no desire to do it ourselves. If it's 80+ degrees and humid, I just don't find sitting outside to be enjoyable. We're still sticking with takeout. My mom treated us to dinner for Father's Day on Sunday and I had the leftovers for dinner last night.

Governor Andrew Cuomo now mandating 14 day quarantines for out of state visitors. Good call. Earlier in the pandemic Florida did the same thing now Florida's numbers increasing. And now the EU banning Americans. Crazy sxxx.

Alaska did the same, though I don't know if/how that was enforced, nor how NY will do so.

Yeah, the real question is how much it gets enforced. I know if Florida, a lot of hotels and rental home owners weren't taking reservations from folks from NY, NJ, and CT so it was getting enforced that way. But if you were flying in or driving in and staying with family, there was no enforcement.

Any Hawaii peeps here? The 14 day quarantine is strictly enforced and violators are jailed. I'm guessing friends or acquaintances (ie, facebook, Instagram, etc) turned them into the police. Hawaii goes as far as sending violators back to where they came from but not sure who pays for it (I hope not the state of Hawaii).
