  • So fed up dealing with contractors

I wouldn't really want to be one dealing with other people trying to satisfy them. We have had some good experiences. We hired a painter to paint our basement this year. He was great etc
but here's my current contractor gripe:

Now I'm in a pickle with a company that does epoxy garage floor coatings.

Two guys come out. We were planning on getting our NEW garage floor epoxyed professionally. Smaller company but they have a website. didn't see any reviews online. none bad. we have the guys come out twice to go over the color we want. we are being picky on color. they know it.

My husband decides to get our garage floor done in a newer technique called full chip. they etch the garage floor, prime it, put epoxy paint on it, cover it with these color chips like confetti, and then put a clear coat on top. we agree on a grand for the job.

They show us color same squares. I didn't like any. They TOLD me I could customize a color if I wanted. ie if there was a color sample of white, tan, chocolate, and black mixed, I could say I don't want the tan in it etc.

My husband tells them we want 60% gray, 20% white, and 20% black chips.(we wanted gray with some black and white speckles) (they order the chips by the pound) I tell hubbie you might be confusing them with ratios etc. but he disagrees. we proceed.

guys say no problem. they tell us three times they will MIX the chips together and then apply. they do say they can't guarantee what it will look it.

they show up etch, prime, epoxy, and put on the chips. they come get me playing in the yard with my tot. I wasn't watching them much. I peeked in once. I saw a bag of black and white chips(you can buy just black and white even mixed chips). they told me they were gonna put gray in it. i said ok.

    later...

They tell me they are done and ask for the agreed $500 deposit to be paid after this part. I take a quick look and say ok and give him the cash. I didn't like it but figured well it's what we asked for gotta live.

After they left, I started to hate it. I realized it didn't have much gray in it, it's quite uneven.
I call them. they admit didn't mix the chips. they threw down a layer of black and white only, then gray only(said it looked bad at this point), and then tons of black and white on top. kinda winging a technique i guess.
I call later and am polite.

I say why didn't you mix. they say if we did it would look bad, not even(thinking then why did you offer to mix before I paid) I didn't say that or much, but they say they can fix by applying another coat of gray epoxy on top of this job (
no clear coat on yet)and then do all gray chips on top. I decided to do a solid color not trusting them to mix anything and to get rid of this bad look into neutral. they say I have to pay about but no more than $400 for materials only. i agreed.

    I hang up...
    then

I notice they ...wait for it.....dripped OIL in my 9 month old white non stained driveway in 4 places (not single drops, multiple areas of many oil drop like 10)and stepped in epoxy paint walked around a bit and left paint foot prints on driveway.

I am so mad but i just text this

your truck spilled oil in driveway..any tips to get out?
they text back..try acetone and wire brush..might leave a stain tho...no sorry etc
    I just say ok

i decide to not say anything, but I think a discussion is in order on monday when they return

also, they gave me no contract to sign yet and I was dumb enuf again to pay a contractor cash without a receipt.

I spent literally 4 hours cleaning my driveway..I wouldn't mind as much if a friend did it.

    ugh!

Leave them a bad review somewhere on the Internet?

I do about 95% of my own work around the house. For the 5% I would hire out I only take references from friends, family, coworkers because even reviews can be faked on the internet.

Hindsight is 20/20 but you should have stopped them when they couldn't figure out how to mix the chips.

Very sorry about this. I hope they haven't done something that will make it nearly impossible to correct the job. Hope they have at least mixed their chemicals so that it will set properly regardless of the color chips they put it.
