  • Gun Sales are Hot !

Buddy of mine is in the firearms business and he says they are selling guns like crazy now. Very little left in stock and people that have never owned guns are scared and coming in and buying anything they can get their hands on. Most of the more common ammunition is sold out too. Was at a local Farm store that sells lots of guns in my hometown and they have the gun area chained off and closed, as they are just about sold out of everything.

This non-stop barrage of bad news has people scared.

Yep, because clearly the way to protect yourself from a viral pandemic is with a gun. Or maybe it's to guard your stash of toilet paper.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

Ruger (RGR) may not be seeing a whole lot of upside from the news. Its stock is down by a $1.24 or 2.63% percent in the past month.

Also, the concern may not from a viral pathogen, rather from other people. I don't think there has been anything quite like this in the country for past hundred years. Nobody is really sure what to do and its not immediately clear what new norms are. So, there may be some psychological comfort in being armed.

I'm pretty sure this is what's going on.

No need to buy more of them, but my homestead is locked and loaded.

I don't think any one truly believes having a gun will ward off a virus. But I have a few for hobby, and simply for home protection (think of an insurance policy). I've said it before, I'm not worried about the virus and contagion. But more about how fear and paranoia in others with a shut down, or possibly martial law leading to looters. You can argue just me owning them is feeding into the fear. But I would counter having them as a back up for protecting the people important to me.

With the market dropping these last 10 days, I will say buying extra ammo was the investment I was most confident about going up in price. Which I jumped on 2 weeks ago, and warned my friend to stock up as well. He told me yesterday that for 9mm and .223 it's pretty scarce.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
