  • How Many Are Sitting Home Not Working?

Just curious, as it's getting pretty silly around here. All restaurants and bars, all YMCA's, libraries, workout facilities, the big three automakers just idled their plants, etc.
Quite a few people are going to out of work,

I am still working. I manage a warehouse.
My girlfriend is a nurse so she is still reporting to work as well.

Fishindude, at this point probably nobody has counted the number of unemployed. The Federal reserve has a pretty good survey, but I think that takes months to field and compile.

BUT - what you're seeing is similar to what I'm hearing here locally in Oregon as well.

I'm an urgent care physician so I'm still working.

My daughter is a swim instructor. Her place shut down on Friday and they were officially laid off on Tuesday so they're able to file for unemployement.

My wife doesn't work outside the home so no change for her other than cancellation of her normal volunteer and social activities.

My brother is getting laid off at the U of M. He works in food service there, and they decided to not resume it this semester. He's got two more days of cleaning there, but hopefully goes back in the fall. Essentially he got off two months early. Another buddy in Los Angeles in the movie industry is probably going to get laid off soon. Not enough work to go around. Another friend as a marketing manager at real estate firm just let someone go (but he said that was already coming). He understand he may be laying more people off in the later months, and he knows he's also at risk.

Wife and I are working from home. I commute an hour one way each day, so it is nice not having to drive in.

She typically travels into the office each week for 2 or 3 nights...so its saving us a lot of money on hotels. Will probably equate to 2-3 grand until she has to report back.

My position requires me to work. They're trying to set-up work from home for some people, but difficult since they'd need to procure laptops for everyone.

I'm on regular time off through the 26th, them I'll be going back to work. However, we are limiting the number of folks that we have in to the minimum required to keep our essential operations moving.

I work from home already a few days a week so I have a laptop but others in my office have brought home their desktops and monitors and are set up at home working remotely. My sisters work at a FedEx call center and they too have brought home their desktops and monitors and are working from home.

It will be very interesting to see if anything changes in the work world once this is all behind us. How many people will be sitting down with their bosses saying, "Look, I worked from home for 2, 3, 4 weeks and did just fine. I got all of my work done. I saved a ton of money on gas and parking and didn't waste 2 hours commuting every day. Can I keep doing it?"

Working in the office (1 of 3 people today) on a Zoom session, while Resident Evil movie is playing in the background, along with youtube, and watching the market earlier.

I'm pretty sure the majority of my peers at home are playing video games, or watching netflix, or both since it's been so quiet for workload this week.

Well, we own a restaurant in Ohio and also own a school and sports photography business, so thinks are not looking good for us. Restaurant is carryout only now per state mandate, but we may have to even shut that down because of our limited carryout orders. We are downtown and the bulk of our business is business lunches and most of the companies are having employees work remotely. Not pretty.

I definitely think there will be changes made in this area and others. Not sure what they will be, but efficiencies will be exposed in several areas with work from home being the most obvious.
