    I had a friend who invited me to one of these sorts of parties - I got annoyed at being asked for admission and didn't go.

      Lol, you should not be charged just to go to a superbowl party. It makes no sense what ever. If you are hosting a party never ask people to pay you, it's the standard and it should stay that way.

        Eh... It's not right. I mean charging a fee - it's ridiculous. If you are strapped on money - why make a party? It's OK to OFFER friends to bring something (like fruits, cheese etc). Bringing some alcohol is OK too. But if it's not gonna be huge party and only close friends are gathering - it's pretty strange to charge them some fee.
        Maybe some pub is much greater idea? People, sport, competition spirit...

          I don't think it's OK, just because you are throwing an expensive party doesn't mean that you can charge people for it!
