  • I'm finally flying home to AK after 7 months in SC... my flights were nearly full a week ago when they were ticketed. All 3 flights now have 20%+ open seats. Which means I get to have my pick of seats, and maybe even get a whole row to myself! Thank you COVID-19!

    • make sure to wipe down the whole row including the seats. You dont want to lie down on a chair and get the corona. Studies said that it the virus passes out of anal discharges :O

      • DD just called, and her university may also opt to close campus and hold all classes online even though there are no cases yet in the state (Idaho). One of her courses is a lab research project and who knows how that will be handled. She graduates in May 2021 and that course is critical. She will speak to professor tomorrow. The other classes will be no issue online. The university will have a decision in one week while she is still here on spring break. DD has heard that her sorority will then remain open for one week so everyone can move out. So she should be able to fly back to take care of that. She will check tomorrow to see if she can get a storage unit in this small town. If not, I will have to drive up to collect her and her stuff. She may have to stay in a hotel for a few days as needed (20 hr drive for me). Sigh..............wonder if they will waive the sorority room and board for the remainder of the semester (probably not). On the bright side, I heard that LAX is a relative ghost town so there should be very little congestion for a change!

        • They finally closed Disneyland Paris. I had a reservation for a stay at the end of this month. I had already cancelled all my other reservations for the two week period because I had decided not to go at this time. When I logged into my account, the reservation was already cancelled. But, there was a note that they would honor the price all the way through Oct 15 of this year--so, that was nice.

          • you probably just need to assume that most schools and events will end up getting closed at least in the short term, probablly thru summer. They're probably already operating on the assumption that the majority of the public will get it at some point, but trying to spread it over a longer period of time so as not to overwhelm the medical facilities and give researchers more time to come up with treatments.

Yep. That's the whole point of the "flatten the curve" info going around.

My elderly parents finally cancelled their european trip to the uk thankfully. Not sure if the plan was to hop to france or elswehere in europe. i have a feeling that trump only excluded them because they have a good relationship with the US. All you need is to get stuck in some quarantine zone in a foreign country for life to really suck...

all of this news that politicians, celebrities, and athletes and whatever are getting the virus is making people panic too because they realize that nobody is immune from catching it. i think it's inevitable at this point.

I have absolutely no desire to get stuck in quarantine on some US military base in Georgia either.

This is exactly what I said a couple of days ago, and just a few hours later, they announced that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were diagnosed.

Nobody is immune. That's the whole point. That's why this is entirely different than the flu.

                  • My niece is coming back from France (study abroad) this Sat, since all the universities are closing up. I know my sister will be happy she's back.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

If you're not travelling, at least you're home quarantined. I'd hate to come back to the US with a fever or cold, then get dumped into a military quarantine zone.

True. But if/when an effective treatment and especially if a vaccine is announced, the market will snap back extremely quick. I would keep dollar cost averaging the market as it falls.

Yep. Once the worst of the epidemic is over, nothing fundamental has changed in the US or world economy so hopefully the recovery will be speedy. The first couple of quarters of corporate earnings are going to be ugly though.

stock market prices in future earnings, so it won't care

                          • My husband, who is semi-retired, won't have to go to his Sunday morning job playing the organ at an Episcopal church this week; the Episcopal diocese has canceled all services. Hope they remember his contract states they still have to pay him for that Sunday.
We were supposed to have a congregational dinner after Shabbat service tonight, it's been canceled We are still having an in person service tonight but tomorrow morning's service will be live streamed only.

This is going to be the first real, direct impact that I'll experience -- my church announced yesterday that all Sunday services, temples, our semi-annual worldwide conference (1st weekend in April), and all other meetings/events are closed/cancelled until further notice. I'll admit that the full extent of that step surprised me a bit, and really made it hit home how much people are afraid about this mess.

I really wish the US (and the global community as a whole) would get their acts together to really focus on controlling both the virus & the narrative.

                              • Here's a twist..

Coronavirus relapse reinfection of discharged patients..

I'm not finding allot on this probably because most reinfections are presently in China.
Depending on the relapse reinfection rate, we might have a much more devastating problem on hand than originally "guessed".
Or are some COVID-19 patients being released before they are truly recovered?
Either way, today's rally might be short lived depending on the rate, and when reinfections begin in other parts of the world.

Also, two strains of the new coronavirus have been identified.
A separate analysis by the team suggests that the L-type was derived from the older S-type. The first strain is likely to have emerged around the time the virus jumped from animals to humans The second emerged soon after that, says the team. Both are involved in the current global outbreak. The fact that the L-type is more prevalent suggests that it is “more aggressive” than the S-type, the team say.

Labs in China have produced covid-19 virus detection kits Two strains of the new coronavirus are spreading around the world, according to an analysis of 103 cases . But the World Health Organization insists that “there is no evidence that the virus has been changing”. So how many strains are there, and why does it …
