  • My daughter has items she needs for schoolwork to finish the end of semester and books that will continue to be needed (physics and mechanical engineering major). The clothing and other items can be replaced easily if not cheaply. She flew home for break and could not possibly bring everything with her on the plane. The bins will fit in the back of the full size truck with no issue (maybe half of the truck capacity). Unfortunately, everyone she knows has already gone from campus so there is no help. Storage places have no vacancies in this small town either. Just got a canned email from the school telling her to work with the local and national sorority chapters if needed, and that the university could assist with the contacts. Well, no help there! And yes we are travelling from a state with a s-i-p order and one of the 3 states we are driving through has one (Oregon).

At this point, it doesn't matter as the damage is done. Only 11 states have shut down so 39 are still out and about spreading disease everywhere they go.
      Maybe.
We can Monday morning quarterback it all we want.

      • Email came out for my financial accounting instructor that all remaining face-to-face courses for spring semester will done online for that college. Can't say I'm surprised, but glad to know they finally came up with a final decision. My other course is already online, so no big deal there.

I have a friend who lives in Florida. About an hour ago, he posted that so far today, 190 flights have arrived in Florida from New York. New York is the state most affected by COVID19. Why are we allowing thousands and thousands of people from NY to fly all around the country? That's not what "quarantine" means. It's the exact opposite of what should be happening.

Who actually has the authority to stop that? Is it the state or the Federal government that needs to shut down travel? It may all be too late at this point, but to still have all of those people from highly infected areas moving around the country is just plain stupid.

          * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
          * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

I would think it is the FAA who has the authority to shut down flights; they are federal.

            • SavingBucks we live in Ohio, my DD lives and works in Indiana. She's been working from home since March 10th. They told her she is not allowed to leave IN in case there is such a thing as states closing borders and getting stuck on the wrong side. Just because it's never happened doesn't mean it won't/can't. We're seeing a lot of things now we never have before.

Not to scare you just telling you our situation. I really wish DD could come home. I feel bad for her all alone in her apartment 24/7 :-(.

              • Mondays are my grocery shopping days. In Los Angeles people are panic buying and hoarding meats, canned goods, spaghetti, eggs, etc. Not to mention TP and cleaning products. Today I bought what ever foods I could find. Broccoli, yams, long beans, bananas, onions, carrots, pork chops, ground turkey, I wanted eggs but all sold out. Last week I had to go to 4 grocery stores, Vons, Food 4 Less, Stater Brothers, and Walmart just to grocery shop. Craziness and madness.

Exactly. And we wonder why the virus is spreading so quickly and broadly. We are literally seeding the country by moving potentially infected people all around.

A friend commented the other day that every disaster movie begins with people ignoring the scientists. And here we are.

                    • work from home order issued in my state. i still need to go in because essential services. Things are pretty haywire right now, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. (people getting hurt and dying is bad though). I believe a person's true abilities and character (or lack thereof) show most during times of adversity. There is no better means of testing someone's adaptabilty and ability to lead than a good old fashioned trial by fire. So it's really interesting to see who rises up to the challenge and who doesn't.

Very true. And the people who step up are often not the ones you would expect. It really brings out the best - and sometimes the worst - in people. Some folks who put on a strong front all the time are the first to break down and others who are usually quiet and just go about their business will be the ones who really shine when times are tough.

Remember that when all of this is over, especially if you are in a leadership position in your organization.

I think this is going to be a marathon. But, my perception is some folks in key leadership roles see this as a sprint, are now bored with it and do not have the attention span needed to solve this.

In the video referenced above--they said they thought we were well beyond putting South Korea's model into play because there are too many cases. South Korea did the contact tracing and testing, but they started it much earlier in the process. (They also seemed to have infinite patience). I heard a piece from the Rockefeller institute where they proposed a model where the folks who are unemployed be hired to to do the contact tracing. My sense is that it might not be too late for certain regions in the country where there is not widespread community spread if additional measures were put in place. But, there are places (CA) that have already thrown their hands up--too many cases to do contact tracing. I imagine New York is well beyond that point, too. The number of cases have gone up so rapidly--partly because of normal spread but partly because it has been in the community for a while and they are now just discovering it with increased testing availability.
Right now--I hope those miracle drugs pan out.....

This is from Gov Cuomo :
                          • Peak number of cases is still 2 to 3 weeks away in New York
                          • "We've procured about 7,000 ventilators. We need, as a minimum, other 30,000 ventilators. This is a critical and desperate need for ventilators [..] We need them in 14 days. Fema is sending 400 ventilators only. Federal action is needed to address this now through the Federal Defense Production Act"
                          • "The numbers are higher in New York because it started here first, it has a lot of international travelers and has high density, but you will see this in cities all across the country, and in suburban communities. Where we are today, you'll be in 4 weeks or 6 weeks.
                          • Probably "hundreds of thousands of people" have already had Covid-19, didn't know they had it, and recovered. Should be tested for antibodies so they could go back to work and keep the economy going

                            • It is amazing to think that I started this thread just 19 days ago asking if you've been impacted yet. Here we are less than 3 weeks later and a better question would be if there anyone left who hasn't been impacted. I doubt there is.

The hospital system I work for sent out a survey asking us for our training and certification info, if we are able to do critical care medicine, and what level of responsibility we'd be comfortable assuming in the hospital setting. Today's daily COVID update spoke about the surge plan and emergency operation protocol and how it will allow them to reassign both clinical and non-clinical staff between facilities to get help where it is most needed.

I was also reading about the FEMA field hospitals that are being established throughout the state (4 here in NJ).

It's really starting to feel like we are living in a disaster movie. Scary stuff.
