  • take out and tipping

Seriously tipping is getting out of control in the US. I tried to us the online take out order. Buying food on the fly on the way home for DH and no plans to stop. They were driving back from lessons and wanted to pick up food. Well one the "tip" started at 15%, 18%, 20% or other. I put other and a couple bucks. BUT seriously? What is the point of take out if you tip the same as eating in? I don't get this tipping policy. I think restaurants need to pay a set wage like the rest of the world and give this insane method a rest. It's ridiculous.

I don't tip if I'm not being served. If I walk up to the counter, place an order, and walk away with my food, that's not a tippable encounter in my opinion. I know they always have a tip jar on the counter but I never utilize it.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

On the receipt printout whenever you get take out I just assume that is a standard template where it includes a tip line.

if you want to add a tip go ahead. I don’t.

As for the online ordering I am not sure what is up with that other than assuming someone will feel obligated to add a tip.

Only time I tip at a carry out place is if it's young kids doing the work.
For instance there is a local pizza joint we pick up at occasionally staffed by several young kids, whom we know and they do a good job. I'll leave a couple bucks or up to five when I pick up a pizza from those guys.

And always make sure you X out that line and write in the total. Don't just leave it all blank. There have been cases of a restaurant employee adding tips that customers hadn't actually left.

At a chain like Chipotle where staff are always turning over and most of them haven't mastered the art of folding a burrito so it doesn't explode, yeah, probably no tip.

At an independent place where I know the staff or owners, no problem chipping in a tip even for takeout.
            History will judge the complicit.

Yep, I'm another non-tipper at take-out restaurants. Generally even if I get change back at the counter with a tip jar sitting there I don't drop it in, it simply goes in my own coin jar at home. I'm a typical 18% to 20% tipper at sit-down restaurants though, based on service. As anyone of us who travels internationally knows, this newer tipping culture in the US is way out of control.

^this. There are 2 non chain local places that we always tip when we take out food. The one is a pizza place that is understaffed, of course. The girls have to answer the phones and grab the food/check out all the take out order people that come in...along with serving the people in the restaurant. We have no problem tipping them.

Another is a local chinese place. Nice people, good food, reasonable price, hard workers...yep, they'll get a tip from us every time.

Good point. I too draw a line through the tip line, and carry down the sub total to the total line and write in that same amount. I never leave it blank. Best practices at protecting my money.

                    I tip $0 for takeout.

Tipping is for wait service rendered.

Sometimes I tip for take out.
I live in a small town and know most people.
It's easy to get a bad reputation where I live.
Good tippers get moved to the front of the line.

I'll sometimes tip for takeout, depending on circumstances. But it's always for smaller amounts, always capping out around 10%.

On the rare occasion when I'm paying cash, I'll sometimes toss the change in the jar. There are a few mom and pop places, like ice cream shops, that are cash only where I'll do that.

I avoid all this by making my own dinner and eating at home

I usually tip a $1 or $2 but it's ridiculous looking at an online order and picking it up that they want a full price tip.
