I definitely have mixed feelings. I personally enjoy playing. There's a real adrenaline rush to winning and it's the same whether it's a penny slot machine or a $25 blackjack table. Heck, there's a free slot game I play on my phone every day and I get a rush from getting a nice win on that with no money involved.

However, I also agree with what you said. Casinos can be depressing and attract a somewhat unsavory crowd, though it partly depends where you go and when. Some places get a much better crowd than others, and who you're likely to see late at night is different than who you'll see on Sunday afternoon.

The single biggest issue we have with casinos in this area is smoking. They managed to lobby to be exempted from the smoking bans years ago saying it would threaten their business. So in NJ and PA, the casinos are filled with smoke. Of course, in DE and MD and maybe NY, casinos are smoke-free and it hasn't hurt their business. I think the argument in NJ and PA was a bunch of bs. The only good thing is it keeps us from going more or spending more time there when we do go because we just can't stand the smoke for more than about an hour.

      luck.

blackjack is for fun. Definitely is possible to get lucky despite the dealer edge. Just like it's very possible to go on a hour+ long dice roll. Some people would rather stay for hours and ride it slowly up and down. Others prefer to slam it in hard and fast at once and see what happens, quick and dirty. Either win big or lose big quick, then go and do something else.
