We dined at two restaurants this past week and when they brought the bill, there was a little note saying something to the affect of "It is greatly appreciated if gratuities are paid in cash". That wasn't the exact wording but you get the idea. I guess the issue is if I tip my server $10, the restaurant has to give her $10 even though they might have to pay the credit card fee on that money.
At the first place, our tip was almost exactly $10 so I left cash. At the second place, I was paying with a gift card so didn't really want to put up anything out of pocket and the tip was $64. I'm thinking they don't have the processing fee on a gift card like they do with a credit card anyway so it's not as big a deal. Even if I had been paying by credit, I probably would have charged the tip. I had enough cash on me but would rather not use it if I don't have to plus it would mean not getting the reward points on that money.
Has anyone else encountered this? And if so, did you use cash or still put the tip on your card?
