  • Wifi Router Fees

Frontier has been charging me $10/month fee for a router we don't need or have. We have a router that is an older Frontier WIFI router. But when I called to remove fees they said it's not a router rental fee like it says it's a maintenance fee. You have to pay it no matter what. Well the US today to pass a law to stop this. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...-dont-provide/

I am still pissed and Frontier won't stop charging until the law goes into effect. Must be nice being a monopoly.

Oh man that's terrible! Is Frontier your only option? I'd be switching to someone else, but understand if they are the only rodeo in town, that sucks

Can you just buy your own?
      They don't cost that much

Oh I own the router. I have had it for four years. But we've had to pay the $10 router fee I've called about it all the time because it's for "Maintenance even if you own your own router." it's a maintenance fee that they charge you even if you own your own router. HAHAHAHA. Only option.

So if your personally owned router breaks, do they come out & fix/replace it?

Are there other providers in your area that you can shop?

I get stuff in the mail weekly for internet providers trying to sell me their service

No other providers. We were having problems in October/November 2019. They didn't show up for 2 appointments before i just lost it and was aggrevated and they showed up finally for the 3rd time. They had to replace the outside cable box. They tried to say they came but we have cameras and I sat at home all day. I said there was NO ONE there. They said oh the repair guy came and never knocked on the door. They also said they fixed the wire in the street so I didn't see them....right...

Maybe look into using your cell phones as WIFI hotspots?
Could be pricey, but it's an option.

This acutally isn't a bad idea... For example, Verizon's unlimited plans include free hotspot tethering, and the only data limit is that the speeds get throttled after 15GB per phone. I use it all the time when I'm traveling or out & about and need a quick, secure wifi connection for a laptop, tablet, or whatever else. It's probably not really practical for a whole-house solution, especially if you've got connected/"smart" devices... But a decent option to consider, especially depending on how badly you want to stick it to Frontier.

we seriously use too much data. I think I checked out comcast from 3 years ago (different house again monopoly provider). it was 300GB a month+. Now we have 4 nest cameras streaming constantly throughout the house and outside. So I am guessing even more. I don't even know how we would use our cell phones as hotspots for as much as we use.
